Starry Background, Starless Nebula: My Latest Experiment

While experimenting with PixInsight, I stumbled upon something I’m calling “Mixed Stars.” Maybe someone has done it before, maybe not—but I just love how it looks! Essentially, I managed to add the stars only in the background while keeping the nebula completely starless and untouched.I think the result is quite striking, but I’d love to hear what you think about it. Has anyone tried something similar? Feedback and thoughts are always welcome! 😊

Honestly, I think it's pretty weird…

Nice nebula but not a fan of the stars…

It certainly creates a different depth of field type of view.

Lately, I've been experimenting with this myself, and I sometimes do something similar, though I don't go fully starless in the nebulosity.

In PixInsight, I sometimes will do a range mask to taste for most of the nebulosity, then add some value to the range mask in pixelmath to lighten the mask so it's not fully opaque (like $T+.7). Then I will combine stars and starless with pixelmath (~star_mask*~starless) when the modified range mask is on the starless. (Note that you need to apply the pixelmath to the starless image, rather than having it create a new image).

The level of star prominence in the nebulosity is then dimmed by some amount that's relative to the level of nebulosity, so the stars are less emphasized and the nebulosity more prominent.

…and what are you calling "Mixed stars" ? What process do you use ?

I applaud the effort of trying something new but I'll pass on giving it a go. I like the version on your profile with stars across the whole image better than this one. The nebula looks great but the odd combination of stars here I think actually distracts from it. Just my opinion though. If you like it, that's all that matters!

I've thought to try something vaguely similar but I don't have pi.

I'd like to remove the stars on the foreground, leave rest alone.

Not really found a way to do this smile

With photoshop. One layer the neb, one layer the stars, put on a mask, then use a brush to mask away all the parts you don't want stars =)

Interesting and different. Not sure I like it as is but it does give me a few ideas!

Thanks!
