I have been imaging with my Canon DSLR for years with decent results in H-alpha. I usually go for a CR2 single exposures run taking care not to induce oversampling. I use PIPP to create a TIFF sequence and works nicely (most of the time). Now when it comes to the alignment and stacking process, I am experiencing some issues. I have tried Autostakkert and Registax with no success and although I have followed a few tutorials, I am giving up on these. It takes ages to get the result an once I get the final image, it usually has a weird aspect, as if the alignment went totally messed up (I have tried several different setup alternatives). The only piece of software that I have used with success has been IRIS but this program has become quite dated (last version is from 2010, similar to Registax or autostakkert). So, two questions for the seasoned solar imaging fellows out there. Is there a better software I should consider before going back to IRIS? It seems there has been very limited innovation in this area as opposed to deepsky imaging. Should I consider taking a video instead (just to speed things u a little)? Even if the resolution will be significantly lower? What are your thoughts?

my typical workflow
AS3!
IMPPG for deconvolution and sharpening (can do the same in Pixinsight)
then finish up in photoshop with high pass filter (small radius), curves, and combine surface and prom layer then add false color
Sometimes I’ll use pixinsight for DBE (full disk to even out background), linear fit (animations) deconvolution (restoration filter), sharpening, de noise with masking, curves, false color. Chuck’s astrophotography link above discusses PI

Thank you Alan. I will check out those tutorials and I will very likely learn another thing or two. Chuck is one great fellow imager I follow for a while. His YouTube channel is really fun to watch and does get amazing results not only with the sun but deepsky alike.
