Telegizmos 365 Cover for Refractor and Heat

Hello,

I am going to a dark site in a few weeks where the daytime temperature will be somewhere between 85F and 95F degrees.  Will the 365 Telegizmos cover, which I will keep over the gear all day until dusk, protect my scope/camera/mount from excess heat?

Thanks,
Jerry

I keep my LX200 telescope, atik camera and EQ6 mount under a telegismos cover  for 12-14" SCT telescopes in my garden all day long with temperatures up to 86 F degrees and so far I had absolutely no problems

I had my rig under a Telegizmos cover this week with temps over 100F. No problems at all!

Fantastic!  Thanks for letting me know Loran.

I keep my equipment (newtonian, guidescope, mount and cables) under a  Geoptik cover all the year long with temperatures ranging from -15°C to 35°C without trouble for more than one year now. I let also the camera, the corrector and the filter for up to one week if there is any chance to continue imaging during the next days. I have a dessicant box that might be recharge if plugged hanging at the mount under the cover. That works great.

I usually keep my scope (Askar FRA 500) and mount (EQ6-R & now AM5) under the telegizmo cover for most of the year. Desiccant is essential to help absorb moisture and prevent rust.

I think the regular telegizmo cover will work just fine. Spending the extra $$ for the 365 cover is a bit overkill unless you plan to leave your setup
outside for extended time spans.

The 365 is white on the outside with a silver internal lining and is weatherproof. I keep my setup out for weeks at a time without issue, through all kinds of temps and weather. As stated above, might be overkill for a few days but you won’t be disappointed on the quality.

Hi Loran!   Is your cover a 365 or the regular cover?

The owner of Telegizmos told me that the regular (non-365) cover keeps the scope a little cooler than the 365, which isn't the way they're advertised.  I bought the 365 thinking it would provide maximum heat protection..

I have the 365, but I was going for all-weather when I bought mine.

Thanks!  That's the one I bought.  I'll see how it works in mid-90sF weather a few weeks...

I've had two refractors and G11 mount's with all the accessory gear under a 365 Telegizmos cover in 112F weather with no problem. Mojave desert!! I do put up a separate shade so direct sunlight does NOT impinge on the units. Air temperature is very hot 105-120F.

I found the temperature under my Telegizmo was the same or, during the day, higher than outside with the sun beating down on it.  Humidity can also be a problem.  I found condensation under the bag as temperatures dropped around dusk. Found it necessary to keep an old fashioned incandescent lightbulb burning inside.

Yikes!  That's not good.  I thought these covers are meant to protect from heat, not make it worse.   Your experience seems to be different from the other people posting about their covers, is there anything different about your situation?

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,

I don't know the climate conditions of other respondents.  I live in central New Hampshire US, which in summer reaches mid-to-high 80sF, occasionally into the 90s, with moderately high humidity.  My solution was to build a small outhouse-sized, well-ventilated shelter which rolls back on rails from the concrete pier. In effect, a roll-off observatory.

I should add that I never identified harm to my setup during the 10 months I used the Telegizmo.  Only surprise was a garter snake that once found its way under the bag and curled up on the supporting plate of the mount.  So it was not critter-proof.

I just replaced my 365 with a new one after 8 years.  The only reason I replaced it was that the inside reflective material has started to shred from repeatedly putting the cover on and off over the years.  Otherwise is was still quite rain-proof.  Great product.

I’ve had my entire imaging rig underneath a Telegizmos 365 cover in my backyard for over 2 years.  This includes a 4” refractor with guidescope, imaging and guiding camera, and Ioptron CEM 60 mount.

I live in SW Florida with no issues due to heat, humidity, and tropical summer downpours.  It’s even weathered tropical storms, but I do draw the line and bring the imaging rig inside for hurricanes.
