Hi All... I'm looking for some tips and critique on my Carina Nebula.  It is my favorite image so far that I've processed but wanted to get your views on where I can make some improvements.  This is the only image that I've taken from a remote telescope site so the data is really good given the location and equipment that were used.  I'm looking for some feedback on my processing techniques, what do you guys think and where can I improve?  Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I actually stumbled across this when I was researching ideal subexposure length for telescope.live and it instantly caught my eye! Really well done, It really has a great depth to it, my only minor critique would be that the sharpening in the high contrast areas (for example the V-shaped dust lane in the middle) is a bit too much for my taste, to the point where some of the details turn to artifacts. Maybe a bit less is more here. But that's also dependent on the scale you're viewing it; If you're not pixel peeping at high magnification, this gives a great overall impression of sharpness. And also the sharpening in the bright parts works perfectly!

Thank you Marc for the awesome feedback!  I will look to see if I can improve the sharpening in those areas!

Hi Nerdy,

I already saw your image before (I liked it btw : ) ). Few things you could improve (I have no idea how the subs or the initial master looks like so it's difficult to judge). The background is too black. You probably clipped some data, the blending could be smoother. The key hole area looks probably overstretched (curves probably). Some stars are burned. So I would say you have to be less aggressive with your histogram stretch or initial NL stretch. Smoother masks probably, take the time to make a good star mask. I like the palette. I think your data probably has more potential. The dark nebulae in the Carina are too dark/black. Play with the cursor and see when you lose signal, and don't go there : ). My two cents.

Loads better than my version also taken from a hosting facility … I only captured ha and Oiii though and made synthetic green channel. I may have a go at reprocessing based on what I have read here.
