Custom or DIY usb cables

Howdy all. I'm in the process of getting my e160 set up. I would like to get custom usb cables for it. I have found some sites that can make custom lengths but so far they only cater to large commercial orders, not 4-6 items like I would need. Does anyone know where I can find usb connectors and cable to make my own cables? I have found some connectors on Digikey but the selection is meager. If you know of a source to have cables made please let me know.
Thanks,
Dan

Are you trying for USB3 or just 2? I did this maybe 10-12 years ago. I found soldering the pin connections to be a pain and opted for off the shelf ones.

Would love to see how this goes for you though. My new E160 is just waiting on some custom built rings.

I have not used them but try:

I usually buy from L-Com.com and they have a wide selection but only predefined sizes.

I will usb3 for the cameras and 2 for the other stuff.

Thanks for the link, I have not seen that site yet.

Have you looked at Amazon, they have USB 2 and 3 as short at 1 ft.

If you choose to get some custom made, please post your results, I keep wondering if it is worth it for a few cases where I am 3" too short to 2' to long and nothing in between sort of thing.  Plus it's really handy that you can get right angle ends.

Whenever I feel like I need to fabricate my own custom cables, I go lie down until the feeling goes away. As a ham who has done lots of homebrew equipment and cables and a ton of soldering, my advice is to make do with high-quality off-the-shelf cables. Homebrew cables are a pain to make and generally are less reliable than you might like. The inconvenience of dealing with cables that are longer than you might like pales in comparison to the hassle of dealing with unreliable cables. I suspect, too, that USB3 cables have pretty stringent tolerances because of the high data speeds they are expected to support. Plus, what happens when you change equipment or configuration? Your custom cables are no longer the correct length. In the words of Nancy Reagan from many years ago, "just say no." There are a ton of commercial options that should be good enough and way less hassle.

I've had good experiences buying pre-made cables from Aliexpress. You can find pretty much every combination of length (30, 50, 80, 100, 120, 150 cm …), USB type (A, B, C …) and orientation (straight through, left/right/up/down right angle). Most cables are only a few dollars. I usually order extra just in case, but touch wood haven't had any quality issues so far.

Hi,
I've been cutting and resoldering to custom lengths USB cables and power cables for a long time now. Some have been in daily service for more than a decade. Also connecting to high quality relays for switching between multiple cameras and power conservation.

Dave

I have purchased from Amazon, I have also had issues with them. I was hoping to go custom for better quality, correct length, and a more flexible cable material. USBfirewire is willing to work with me, I will let everyone know how it works out.

I played with the pricing on USBfirewire and a custom 14" usb3 cable came out to ~70. Is that right? For that price, I can probably find a way to use the 2ft cable still.

It is pretty cool how you can specify the various angles though.

I tried and got about the same.  It's a tedious process to solder USB3 cables.  I'm not too surprised by that amount, but yes, it is kind of off-putting.

Compared to the dollars I've just dished out for the E160 and all  the accouterments, this would be less than 5%. If it provides increased reliability and a more stable platform it would be worth it for me. A trip to my viewing site ruined by a bad cable could cost me about 5 hours.

USBfirewire is pretty good. I ordered 5 custom usb cables and they arrived a week later. Quality looks much better than the typical amazon product. I ordered the high flex cable and it is very supple.

Dan,

OT, but curious how you are hooking your focus controller and other boxes to the OTA. Are they attached directly to the tube or some sort of bracket underneath?
Dan Brown avatar
I built two brackets that hold the focuser, computer, usb hub, and the power supply box. I also made the adapter that joins the filter  wheel and camera, and the adapter for the guide scope.

Here is a cad render that shows the brackets without the dovetail.

Dan,

Nice work.  That is an excellent solution.  I like how things are nested nicely below the OTA and if you arent running a guidescope you could put a handle on top.

I might need to design something like this for my setup.  I am currently just mounting the focuslynx controller and a upbv2.
