Hi!

How does one tell the difference between a hot pixel and a red star?

If images of different points in the sky have a red pixel at the same location, then it's a bad pixel. Dithered images should show the same relationship…a stationary red pixel for a hot pixel. This all assumes you are shooting OSC.
