What kind of router do you use when you are out on the field?

I havent been imaging outside of home yet so I haven't really needed a wifi router to control my rig yet. Im Using my home wifi to remote desktop to my imaginpc and control everything from inside.

But im planning on doing some imaging outside of home and for that I need a wifi connection so I can use my phone/tablet to remote desktop into my pc thats mounted on my scope. Are there any tiny routers that can be powered via USB or something for my setup to work?
Im using Mele quieter 3

And no I dont want to use ASAIR =)

I use tethering of my iPad, works great and consumes surprisingly little power, one iPad charge is enough for several nights

I use this as well. Works wonderfully and can be powered by USB.

How does the computer know when to create its own wifi when on the field? will I see the router automatically when I search for wifi on my phone/tablet? I have never done this before and I dont want to drive to a place and not being able to connect to the melee

Yes, once the router boots up it'll start broadcasting wifi and your devices will see and connect automatically. Be sure to configure and test it home before taking it into the field. I personally go into the field with a small tablet monitor and wireless keyboard just in case I cant access the imaging PC remotely but I've never had to use it.

Hi Daniel,
I am using the MeLE PCG02 and I start a Wi-Fi hotspot on it at boot time where I connect from my laptop via RDP. (I suppose you can do the same with your Mele quieter 3).
MeLE PCG02 requires 5V/3A via USB to power up and I also have a newer version which requires 12V/2A (also via USB). So both can be powered by small portable power packs with PD via USB.

I prefer to go wired. Laptop with USB Hub. Bulletproof

I allways have a 10 meter long crossover network cable with me. This allways works without any risks.

My Mele mini creates its own wifi Hotspot on startup, which I connect to and use rdp to control my mini pc. Works flawlessly.

I tried every trick on the internet to get the MQ4 to broadcast a hotspot, but it was always disconnecting in the field.
TP-Link AC750 mini wifi router is an extra gadget on my rig, but it's weightless and draws < 4mA.

I join them with the 6" network cable.
People say the range is poor, but when I'm napping in the car I have a strong and instant connection via RDP.
I hotspot to my phone if I have bars and forget to pre-load the target into NINA.

for me, this is a cadillac package that's never let me down.
Just need got figure out why the MQ4 is running  at 100% processor all night - I blame 0.5" guiding frames.

I do just as Mijo, very convenient and it works. I have had the power supply come lose, disconnecting power in the middle of the night. Now that it has happened I make sure the cable is at a good angle to keep good contact.   The signal is plenty strong for me. Like Mijo, I travel and stay in tent or sleep in my truck.

*** In my case it was a bit tricky, as Windows by default will not start the hotspot in the absence of an active internet connection. But there are ways to overcome this inconvenience (there are tutorials on the internet about how to do it).
Me, I had to start the hotspot via a powershell script scheduled to run at startup. And that's fine; it just requires a bit of configuration. And in operation it works flawlessly and no need of an additional device.***

*** Exactly the same way I use it, too. Cuiv has a good video on setting up everything but he uses a third party tool for the no internet hotspot. I searched in the internet and found a Reddit thread describing to set up a hotspot without internet via startup script.

Once it automatically activates on startup it is very reliable and in no situation it has let me down.
