Roller bearing and grease advice

Hello everyone,

I am in the process of tuning my Explore Scientific Exos 2 mount with the hope of improving the guiding enough so that I can switch my
Samyang 135F2 for my Sharpstar 76 EDPH which has considerably more reach ( 342mm ) and weights a bit more.

I have already polish the mating surfaces which made a significant difference when balancing the RA axis and now it is time to change the roller bearings.
For what I can see, they are cheap generic roller bearings, unbranded, and I can feel some friction and roughness when turning them by hand, so I expect some improvement by switching them for better one.

Following the advice on this post:

https://espmc-eight.groups.io/g/MOUNTS/message/518

I've alrealdy order hybrid ceramic bearings for the RA worm gear bearings.
But now I am wondering if I need to change all the bearings for ceramic ones, especially considering that these are costly.

So my questions are :

Are ceramic bearing worth it ?

If stick with steel ball bearings, what brand should I choose ? I was thinking of SKF

The orignal ones are "Z" bearings, they have protection against dirt, like this one : https://www.123roulement.com/roulements-6809-ZZ
Is it an issue to change them for "2RS" like these one : https://www.123roulement.com/roulements-6809-2RS-SKF
The reason being that I can't find "Z" one's from SKF

And lastly, do you have any advice one the grease to use ? I have some generic universal lithium grease, but it feels rather thick.

Thank you
Pablo

To naswer your questions:

1. Are ceramic bearing worth it? Not really, especially not in an Exos-2.
2. Any half decent ball bearing would do the job but chose a western producer.
3. "Z" is the way to go, that is shielded from grit and dirt.
4. Any low temperature lithium grease will do.

What I've seen recommended for grease is "Super Lube", I've been using https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C5014K8/

Pablo,
If you are going to change the bearings to improve mount performance, the most important thing about the bearings is the ABEC precision grade; not whether they are ceramic.  You might check out this page:  https://www.astbearings.com/bearing-tolerances-precision-levels.html

The type of grease isn't very important for mounts simply because they turn so slowly.  My feeling is that any thick bearing grease will work fine.  I have typically used either #6 Shell aerospace bearing grease or (more commonly) Mobile 1 synthetic bearing grease--mainly because it is so viscous and doesn't separate when it's warm.

Thank you all for your answers !

John, thank you for the advice. I'm looking specifically for ABEC 3 bearings (couldn't find any of a higher ABEC rating) and all I get is bearings made for bikes like this one :

Is the seal they have going to be an issue ?

Thank you
