Hello,

I'm ready to install the dew heater on my Edge HD scope but noticed there's a plastic film that is covering the entire copper heating strip.  I assume this is meant to be removed, but there's nothing about that in the instructions either for or against removing it.

I want to be sure before I take it off.

Can anyone confirm that this plastic film needs to be removed?

Thanks!
Jerry

What dew heater do you have? Is it the dew heater ring that Celestron sells? I've never heard/seen anyone discuss removing any plastic to expose copper.

Yes, it's the Celestron dew heater ring for the 8" Edge.  Support person at Celestron said to remove the plastic wrap, but even she seemed not to be 100% certain.  My dealer doesn't know, the online videos I've watched on You Tube don't mention it, so I am really baffled by this.  How weird.  It makes no sense to heat plastic.  Support person said the plastic is to protect it in shipping..

I agree it makes no sense to heat plastic. Nothing I’ve seen or read even mentions any plastic. From what you’ve described it certainly sounds like it should be removed. Got a picture of the plastic in question?

Sure, here's a photo.  The film extends 360 degrees around the copper heating element.  It simply must be for shipping and packing purposes only.

I installed my dew heater ring with the plastic on and it works just fine. I'm pretty sure its apart of the component that heats up the corrector, so that there's a bit of space between both the copper heating element and the metal on the scope. Don't take my word it though, I don't work at Celestron.

I heard back from Celestron.  Here's what they told me:

Good morning Jerry,
Thank you for contacting Celestron Technical Support.
Please do not remove any plastic coating from the dew heater, Install it as is.

Good luck!
