I have an 8" Newtonian scope with OK optics.  I don't use it nearly often enough.  I have yet to see the Aurora Borealis with my own eyes - cloud cover every time I've thought I might get lucky.  At my first ever Star Party (looooong ago near Seattle Washington) I won a signed print of an award winning photo of Haley's Comet.  I recall with intensity the first time I found Saturn for myself and saw those beautiful rings with my very own eyes - not a photo.  It was magical.
