General tutorial for post processing of Jupiter or any other avi file - Forums

Hallo to everyone,
im looking forward to finding a good tutorial or workflow for avi post processing , of either Jupiter , moon or any other solar system object.

I‘m from now on using my Celestron Edge hd 800 and there I can attach my barlow. Which is a Explore Scientific 3x . And as webcam I use my QHY5L IIC. For imaging , I use the programm firecapture.

i already tried a few times, also with other telescopes on different nights and different type of seeing . But my results aren’t so nice.

But it can also be because my processing of the files isn’t so good.

i have registax and avistack. for avistack I first have to convert to an old format avi file. that makes it more complicated.

And I also have pixinsight .

So if there is a nice workflow I could follow or any suggestion I could follow , I’ll be more than thankful.

Hallo Peter,

what does autostakkert ? Why does it help ? Or in which way ?
i read about that program here in the information of some planet pictures .

I would suggest pre-process AVI files in PIP 64 (software helps to choose better shots), then Autostakkert 4 (the program allign and stack shots), finally use Registax 6 for venletts, RGB allign, RGB balance etc. Better to use also Winjupos to de-rotate video, but I had no so much success (it really helps if you know the tricks). Finally you may adjust colors and noises in PS or other graphical editor. Clear skies!

Hi Dennis,

I only started RGB planetary imaging a couple of months ago, and am far from an expert.
Also, my equipment is fairly modest in that I only use a refractor (120mm).

Some settings I have settled on for my camera (ASI 290mmbased on research and experimentation are:
Jupiter: 60 seconds, 12 msec @ gain 450, maximum FPS
Mars: 120 seconds, 12 msec @ gain 450, maximum FPS
Saturn: 120 seconds, 20 msec @ gain 450, maximum FPS

Below is a processing workflow that works for me, derived from various Internet articles and YouTube clips.
Note that Jupiter in particular rotates quickly (36 degrees per hour, or 0.6 degrees per minute), so de-rotation of the video stream is important to counter blurring. I image using a FL of 4200mm, using a 5x PowerMate in my refractor.

1.AutoStakkert
- prelim stacks

2.WinJUPOS
- Celestial Body
- set options directory
- image orientation check (Tools ->Ephemerides Check)
eg. south at top, Mirror-Inverted
- prelim measurement files (Recording-> Image Measurement)
Opt: Mirror Inverted
Open (F7) .... using the preliminary stacks (_conv) from AutoStakkert
Adj/Outline Frame/Auto Detection (F11)
Imag/Image Info (RED, GREEN, or BLUE)
Save
- derotate video streams (Tools->Derotate Video Streams)

3.AutoStakkert
- de-rotated stacks

4.WinJUPOS
- new measurement files (usingde-rotated "conv")
- Opt: Mirror Inverted
- Adj: RED, GREEN, BLUE
- fit frames accurately (afterincreasing brightness & contrast)
- derotate RGB frames (Optimise ImageMeasurements R/G/B)

5.Registax
- Show full image
- Histogram (remove left backgroundpeak) … then apply by clicking on Stretch
- RGB align ... set evaluation areausing Show Area, then Estimate
- RGB Balance … Reset,then Auto Balance
- Wavelets: Linear / Gaussian
- Sharpen 0.1 / Preview 100 (experiment)
- Denoise .4/.3/.2 (experiment)

6.PixInsight
- UnsharpMask .... approx 2.00 / 0.70
or 2 iterations of 2.00 / 0.50

7.PixInsight
- maybe some form of Noise Reduction

Hi Dennis. I would suggest a nice peice of freeware called Gimp. Many of it's features are similar (almost identical, in fact) to Photoshop. It's what I use and I love it. This way you can process in layers, go further with sharpening, contrast and color adjustments, etc. Registax is a nice tool, but it has limitations. There are lots of utube tutorials on how to use it too.
