Cartes du Ciel used to open in a few secs on my new SSD laptop with 16GB ram. Possibly since a recent Win 10 update it now takes 40 secs
and I haven't changed anything that I am aware off. Has this happened to anyone else? I tried deleting and reinstalling to no avail. I works OK once loaded although there have been a few scope slewing issues.

why are you using Cartes du Ciel? What's wrong with Stellarium?

This is a fantastic question.  I tried both of them myself, I found Stellarium a bit harder to use.  However, the software I found better for me is Skytools 4.  It has tools to help you track and mange your imaging sessions as well as let you know optimum times to image.  It also allows me to understand how many images I need to get to a quality level that I set.  From what I understand you can use it to automate your sessions, but  I prefer Sharpcap as it has a programming like script for setting up imaging sessions.

I find myself not even using Cart at all.

I run a tech firm, this behavior can arise from a network misconfiguration of the hostname on your PC or in the settings of your wifi router.  It seems to impact Windows more than Linux/MacOS, especially the newer Windows 10 upgrades.

Even apps without networking can experience slowdowns.

This thread contains a possible solution.

Why not Stellarium? I use it on my workstation as my goto star chart. I use Cartes on my laptop connected to my mount to select an object to view and point the mount to it. I have heard Stellarium will do the same thing so perhaps I should try that? I prefer it as a star chart.
Regarding the network issue I think I need to connect the laptop with a cable to my router and see if the problem goes away. I have had to change routers about the time I had the issue so maybe that's it. The laptop connects to the internet quickly. Thanks for the advice.

Interesting. What I like about Stellarium is the ability to click on an object and send my scope there with Ctrl-1.
But I'd not heard of Skytools. I'll check that out. Thanks
