Decent 400mm flat panel?

12” newt, OD of the OTA is about 14.25”/362mm. so I am figuring I should opt for a 400mm panel, yeah? 3nm antlia SHO, LRGB in the wheel

I was considerin6g the wandererastro White Dwarf Flat Panel 400mm (manual knob $370), or the gemini panel (dimmable, usb, like $270?).

I can’t spring for much more than the wandererastro in terms of budget (kinda stretching it already), but the manual control took me for a quick pause. I currently just leave the large A2 light tracing panel at one brightness and vary exposure , but I have to use 3 tshirts to dim it enough to get decent exposure times in LRGB (not too fast, there is banding for sure on the panel at too fast exposures) and the panel itself is unwiedly / showing age in the short time I’ve had it.

But the gemini I may have seen one report of illumination falloff to the edges, but that was also the flip down motorized panel and I can’t tell differences between various flat panel models. Guess I’m fine with a manual knob as long as the panel itself is a good one to go with and has no weird variability, given i’m already varying exposure instead of making adjustments to brightness.

Anyone have advice, maybe just that the wandererastro is a fine choice, flicker free, good, even, etc? Or to consider something else? Just looking to avoid making a mistake when spending a good chunk of money to ease my current problems.

I’ve been using a large tracing panel for a couple years now and I too share the issue of it being too bright. I generally put two t-shirts minimum as well as a couple sheets of paper to get it dim enough. I do see the banding occasionally, but since it’s never in the same spot, it doesn’t bother me.


What I will say, (and what I would do in your situation) is start using a white t-shirt and doing skyflats this way. Heck, you could even design a 3D printed ring to hold the shirt taut. Drop it over the end and shoot sky flats. I’ve done this quite a few times now and my flats have been perfect without worry. It’s miles cheaper and honestly kinda faster anyways. With a t-shirt over the end you don’t have to be quite as picky for sky conditions either, and can honestly shoot the second the sun goes over the horizon.

I cannot but totally agree with Brian above, my 300mm f/4 front is permanently covered with a (pinkish!) cloth held taunt by a strap. You just uncover the scope and start taking flats right away, even with few clouds in the sky.

I use a clear/white garbage bag tied lightly with a piece of string, then a piece of perspex thrown on the top. Cheap light panel with 4 adjustments that I found on Amazon. The panel can be used both ways if too bright etc. Obviously for home use.

I also use light panels (A4, A3, A2), and mine have a white backside.
If i do narrowband i use the front and LRGB I flip them and use the back… quite simple.

Why re-invent the wheel? I just use an embroidery hoop! Works great!

I also find the tracing panel I use to be too bright and have done exactly what Brian suggests - the T-shirt is doubled up and I use 4 sheets of paper. And this is the low setting on the tracing panel.

The a2 tracing panel is unwieldy for dark site transport (yes, I take my 12”, welded pier, and cem70 mobile — not too much hassle!) and after 6 months it's developed weird zones of splotchiness when on. So the tracing panel needs to be retired.

Sky flats are not consistent and do not give me the control that is needed. The window I have to be outside for sky flats, taking all 6 slots in that appropriate window of time without missing it or having the last 2 slots start to take minutes per exposure because the window is too late, etc, it's not reliable. Getting to the dark site slightly after sky flats time, then needing to leave before dawn, it just doesn't work.

Does no one have an opinion on the flat panel themselves? Yes I can make a hoop to dim whatever panel, but I still need a panel. The a2 panel is too large and has splotches on it now, much less the other issues mentioned.

Oh yes, that reminds me, the cheaper 2 options would be that one or the bare cheapest being a “EL Flat panel” bare from aliexpress for around $100. My only concern with those was illumination profile and flicker.

So I guess this is where I’ve been at the decision crossroads for a while, if the wanderer is materially safer in terms of illumination profile, non-flickering, or if the gemini or even bare flat panel/diy options are also safe and won’t end up in an unknown headache. I guess I am not sure how to judge what is material.

I think what might get lost in discussions of flat panels is how good are they? Is the light source broadband, does it emit light at all the needed frequencies? Does it have a high degree of consistency in brightness and color across the panel? What’s good enough to be used as a light table for tracing might not be nearly good enough for a calibration source. How consistent will it be a different temps and how consistent will it be over time? While it might look ok, is it really of the standard needed? It is indeed a lot to ask.

That’s why I shoot sky flats.

Cool, thanks, well at least that confirms that it’s the wanderer is an acceptable option / current OK option. I just never am sure if some random piece of gear is antiquated or good, being new to this.

Hi, I’m using the fully automated Wandere Cover V4Por-EC Motorized Flat Panel with NINA which automatically takes flats after each night and I’m extremely satisfied with the device.

It’s not cheap, 60% more than the White Dwarf, but really worth the investment, as taking flats can be fully automated by all ASCOM compatible software.

(I’m using a smaller size for my telescope)
