ZWO EFW36 vibration during filter change cause guide issue

Hello,
I've had a ZWO EFW36 for at least 5 years, and it's always worked well.
A few days ago, a problem started to appear: basically, during the filter change session, I "see" a spike in the guide, as if there were vibrations.
I usually do LRGB - dither LRGB - dither, etc., and between L>R, R>G, and G>B, I get this vibration. I use the EFW offset without making AF every filter change.
I use ASIAIR+ and AM5N, and I've never had any problems with the guide.
I tried removing the wheel and checking for dirt, but everything seems fine. Can you recommend anything?
Could be a power issue ? (Stupid question, all the rest work fine !).

Sembra piu’ un problema di connessione tra le parti che altro. Cambiare filtro in una ruota implica sempre una coppia applicata fuori asse, ergo in particolari configurazioni questo puo’ dar luogo alle “vibrazioni” suddette.

Escluso quel problema, ha funzionato senza problemi per almeno 3 mesi con l’ultima configurazione senza toccare niente.

I’m using the OAG-L that is mounted after the EFW so problem with the NB filters and yes, i’m using the offset for the focus of each filter.

I did a test the other night and was very surprised by the results.

If I start the guide in "preview" mode (Asiair), if I then manually change the filter in the EFW36 wheel, the guide doesn't notice.

I've done several tests, and I'm sure of this.

If, on the other hand, I set a session to autorun, the classic L>R>G>B without focusing (I use the offset), the guide peaks when I change the filter.

It's incredible.

I should have realized that you shoot with a refractor and have offsets between LRGB filters (I don’t) so you refocus each time but I expect you do not pause guiding between each refocusing?

So as andrea was eluding to, the spike is because you are not pausing between filter changes.

The reason you ‘sometimes’ see it and sometime dont, is because of focuser backlash compensation. If your focuser moves in the direction under tension, the star size changes very minimally and you may not even notice in PHD. However if your offset shifts focus in the direction of backlash comp, you’re seeing a large jump in focus. This is the spike you are seeing.

It’s recommended to disable guiding during filter change.

I use ASIAIR and its app. I use a 200/800 Newtonian and have been using OFFSET focusing for months now, almost since they introduced the new feature.

I've never had any problems. ASIAIR is foolproof and does everything automatically: it turns the wheel and simultaneously moves the EAF to adjust the offset. It then restarts with the new image only after everything has been adjusted (filter and EAF).

I haven't had any problems in months and months. Only a few days ago did this strange behavior appear, with these strange peaks in the focusing range that occur when changing filters.

The only thing I can try is to set an interval of a few seconds between filter changes.

Feel free to start your preview mode, do the guiding again. Shift to a filter, THEN shift back to the previous filter. You should see it then.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a recent release for the ASIair messed something up. I’ve been seeing a few strange, unexplainable occurrences in the past few days from asiair folks. And they all seem to be interactions with PHD2

Hi Brian,

I wrote it above, but I tried again anyway.

In preview while driving, if I manually change the filters, nothing happens, everything's fine. However, it's not the same as autorun because in preview, Asiair does NOT move the EAF using the offset.

I don't want the problem to be with the EAF itself at this point.

I also tried the interval option (5 or 10 seconds), but it's useless because the sequence is:

shot > pause for x seconds > filter change > shot.

The pause would help if it were performed AFTER the filter change, but it doesn't help.

Never mind, while I wait for updates (it could be an Asiair bug), I'll go back to using group by slot ON and take one channel at a time. What a shame.

if you’re using filter offsets and an OAG, chances are your spike in guiding is caused by the focuser movement (potentially focuser shift, but more likely focuser backlash compensation or abrupt movement), not the filter change…

You can tell most imaging software to pause guiding during a filter change, that will probably resolve the issue regardless of the cause.

Also, when you say the OAG is after the filterwheel… Do you mean you’ve got:
Telescope → Filter wheel → OAG → Camera?

If so, when the filterwheel rotates, there will be a brief moment where the signal on the guide stars is cut off by the carousel, this will cause a marked drop in star snr, which could account for it too.

You ‘should’ be running:
Telescope → OAG → Filter Wheel → Camera.

Furthermore, a dither will cause some disruption in guiding, as you’re physically bumping the mount slightly to achieve the dither, there is always a period where the mount settles, your guiding and imaging software should be waiting for guiding to settle before commencing imaging.

Lastly…
Dithering between L → R, R → G, G → B is 100% overkill. These frames are not stacked together, they are combined into individual stacks. Therefore, the accepted norm is to shoot L, R, G, B → Dither. That way, you’re dithering every frame PER STACK..

I personally shoot L L L R G B → Dither, I find that 1 dither per every 3 L frames is plenty (given the exposures are half the duration of a R G or B frame also).

Il problema può essere dovuto al fok e non alla EFW. Durante lo spostamento del fok, Un lieve gioco può spostare l’asse ottico a seconda della coppia esercìtata dal payload e quindi a seconda della inclinazione di questo rispetto al vettore gravità. Questo spiega perché alcune volte si vede ed altre no. È anche possibile che il gioco sia aumentato negli ultimi mesi. E spiega perché lo si vede lasciando la guida attiva durante la focalizzazione e non lo si veda se si cambiano i filtri senza attivare la correzione del fuoco

Of course, i do LRGB or LLRGB and dither. Make dither after any filter change is nonsense.

About my setup: telescope > Coma corrector > OAG-L > EFW36 > ASI2600mm.

The asiair app is limiter about the pause between shots and does not solve the problem.

I think is a focuser problem, too.
