Gday all.
Sometimes I use my visual SW 10’ newt to take a photo. If I put my home made hood on and take subframes, should it remain on for flats? My gut says yes but I thought Id give the gurus a yell.
Appreciate your time.
You say a visual Newt.
How are you attaining focus with it in your camera?
There are fundamental differences between visual Newtonians and Astrograph Newtonians.
Mainly the main mirror placement for attaining focus.

But yes, Flats need to be taken as Tony sez, at the same configuration. I take a set of Flats, Darks, and Bias as a library set. Then reuse mine because they are reference images. When I started, I took fresh Flats, Darks, and Bias. But having tried the library method, like so many others use, I prefer it.
Have fun on your adventures in Space!

Mate I say my visual newt because thats what I mainly do with it. I image most of the times with an Askar FRA 500. The newt is a SW 250PDS and its capable of taking photos when I occasionally decide to set it up as its a pain. Its a tad heavy and its on limits on my mount. I changed the focuser, spider vanes, mirror mask and added catseye for better collimation. I use a paracorr but this is not at the correct spacing due to the different focuser…then I put up with a full frame and vignetting. It all comes out in the wash using pixinsight and exterminators. Was curious about flats and the hood. In my previous photos I used the hood but took it off to do the flats and they seem ok. A tad soft due to being way oversampled. Was curious to leave it on as I explained above.
Thanks for the response mate. Ta
