NINA - Astrometric solution

Hi AB,

Is NINA supposed to automatically plate solve my images and save the astrometric solution in the fits file ? I don’t remember ever having to manually do it when using an Asiair. I assumed NINA would do it too but it doesn’t for me.

I have ASTAP installed and configured, it works fine when I manually plate solve a snapshot.

Coords in the FITS header are pulled from the deep sky instruction set.

In other words, no. The final stack of images will not be plate solved. Nina uses plate solving to control the mount, not to solve the individual frames.

I use NINA all the time and it plate solves in ASTAP as directed to. During its initiation and when it does my meridian flip.

You do have to set things up in NINA for these steps to happen. And different folks use NINA different ways. You can comb through Cuiv’s NINA videos and make sure you aren’t missing something along the way. I went through all of his tutorials 2-3 years ago setting my stuff up for remote operation, (if you can call ~75 feet remote 🤔). And occasionally I’ve gone back to fine tune oddities.

Once you get everything working, NINA is really great. Getting there can be a PITA.

He was asking if NINA solves images and saves that information to the FITS header. It doesn't. It saves whatever coordinates are in the deep sky instruction set to the FITS header. There may be a plugin that can change this behavior but that is the default behavior.

Here’s the thing. I like how the Asiair plate solves images and shows you named stars and other stuff. I was trying to do the same in PI with a sub I shot with Nina and wondered if my setup was wrong or if it simply doesn’t do it.

It’s not a requirement for me and not a deal breaker either. My Stellavita doesn’t work well with the MiniCAM8 so I’m switching to Nina and learning things.

And to be honest I don’t even know it the Stellavita does it. It can plate solve but not sure it stores it in the fits header.

That’s not really a big deal. You’ll end up plate solving the final stacked image in your processing program anyway in order to do SPCC color correction.

There is not annotation when I plate solve a sub. Is it not a feature in the SV or am I missing something ? For info, I use the iOS version.
