Sky Rover 50 SAW review

I have been searching for a telescope with the shortest focal length, the largest aperture possible, and which would work with a full-frame sensor.

My first one was RedCat51, which was quite OK, but I wanted something shorter. I found Askar ACL200, which was also OKish, but still, it was not short enough.

Then the WO MiniCat was released. I was about to pull the trigger, but several negative reviews changed my mind.

In October 2025, I noticed a similar scope to MiniCat. The specifications were nearly identical, only it’s much lighter and cheaper. However, there were no reviews. I decided to take a risk and purchase one.

This was my first order from this shop, so I was hesitating. The scope arrived in Switzerland within one month, so no problems here.

Here is the first light of this scope. Equipment: iOptron HEM15, Camera ZWO ASI6200MC, and obviously SkyRover 50 SAW equipped with ZWO EAF. Stack of 10 frames, each 300s. Guided by a 130 mm guide scope. Calibrated with Darks and Flats. No filter used. The test was done on 27.10.2025.

Swan_mosaic.jpgIt is obviously not perfect. The stars in the corners suffer from chromatic aberration and astigmatism. The lower right corner seems to be defocused.

You might say: “It’s the tilt! Fix it and write a proper review.” However, I own TiltAdjuster (https://www.astroprecision.no/), and I checked the tilt. There is no tilt between the sensor and the M48 threat. This must be a play of the focuser or some problem with the optics.

When I apply BlurXterminator:

Conclusions:

It’s not perfect, but I will keep it.

Pros:

  • I like the size and weight of it.

  • Also, the focal length fulfils my needs.

  • Integrated rotator

Cons:

  • Stars are not perfect at the corners of a full-frame sensor. However, it’s correctable by BLX.

  • Defocused one corner (not caused by the tilt of the sensor)

So, what to do with this scope? The focal length of 175 mm combined with a full-frame sensor provides a really wide field. Probably, I am going to make a sweep through the Milky Way and create a mosaic, but let’s see.

Thanks for sharing the review. It is cute, however that corner performance looks quite concerning. If there are truly no tilt issues at play, then something is wrong with the optical alignment.

Hi Jakub,

according to the spot diagram on the site, the difference looks quite small between center and the corner of a full frame sensor. I have the astroprecision tool too but despite the fact that my imaging train is tuned with no tilt, Hocus focus can report tilt because of the focuser and / or rotator angle. And this is highly sensitive with a full frame sensor. Have you check with Hocus Focus your backfocus and tilt? It is a very powerful tool and I designed an excel sheet to transform the result of hocus focus into concrete move of the 3 tilt screws of the camera. Hope this can help.

If we compare the spot diagram of Sky Rover 50:

image.pngWe can notice that they are identical. Either Sky Rover copied the spot diagram, because Minicat was earlier on the market, or the optical design of these two scopes is identical.

We have to realize that the spot diagram is just a simulation of an ideally assembled optics. Manufacturing and assembly tolerances are not considered in this simulation. The reality might be completely different.

Regarding playing with the tilt, thanks a lot for sharing the thread, I will have a look.

I tried to play around a bit manually. Even though I checked and adjusted the camera before with the TiltAdjuster.

Here is the initial state:

image.pngI turned the rotator by 180°

image.pngAt least it keeps the same camera corner. So I started to fiddle with the push-pull screws. It was extremely sensitive. I improved one corner, and the other one got worse.

This was the best I was able to achieve.

image.pngWell, one can buy an Electronic Tilter ETA and automate it, but it costs more than the telescope and completely ruins the beauty of a small, portable, pocket-sized set-up.

The easiest thing is to apply the BlurXterminator, period.

BTW, I am testing SVbony 535 105/f2.8, which is even faster. First light under the Moonlight shows zero tilt. This scope/lens is ridiculously wide, stars are also not perfect in the corners, but much better compared to SR 50SAW, and it has no tilt issues (same camera and adapters).

I think the Nikkor 105 f/2.8 AF-Macro is a potentially better choice at that focal length (105mm):

Regarding tilt adjustment, my experience with hocus focus is that it was very difficult to translate the indication of hocus focus to pratical moves of the 3 adjusting screws of the tilt plate of my ASI2600. That is why I bought one ETA for one of my setup (the one intended to be remotely operated) and prepared the spreadsheet to help me with the manual tilt of the second setup. Once the parameters are tuned adjusting the screws is much easier (which one in which direction and amount) but you are right the overshoot is very easy to do when you get close from the 0 tilt position.
