NGC 1797, never imaged on AstroBin!

Seems like NGC 1797 has never been imaged on AstroBin. It only appears as one of the background galaxies in images of the Witch Head. I thought it might be interesting for the members of this group to race to be the first one to image this galaxy!

Obviously it's tiny and challenging, but I'd love to see some high resolution images of it!

I’ll add it to my current rotation, but not sure my equipment is going to bring out much detail at that size!

It would be ok at 1800mm which I can do but, because of trees I can’t get to anything south of +20 dec.

This looks like a project for the guys with scopes in Chile. Look forward to the images!

I can give it a go tonight from Wellington!

I just checked and it hits 40 degrees elevation at around 1.30am and rises to 57 degrees 3 hours later. The skies are supposed to be clear.

I’ll switch to my C9.25 and image at native focal length, which is 2,320mm with my setup. It’ll be 11% moon, so I can use UV/IRCut. It’ll unfortunately be with an OSC, but that is the only camera with the right pixel size for the C9.25.

The storms have died down, and the forecast is light winds, so I should be able to get good enough RMS (I have active optics as well that helps).

There pretty small to be on someone's target list.

The good news is that I got loads of images of Abell 2877, the bad news is that the alarm didn’t go off and I woke up to the sound of an angry PHD2 failing to guide because of high clouds at 4am.

I tried to get a pot shot of NGC 1797, but the clouds were too thick.

The next opportunity is the 30th, but with 46% moon.

It’s 4.30am now, so I’m going to close up the observatory and go to bed (again) very disappointed.

At least Abell 2877 is a first on AstroBin as well.

Intended to image this in December, my seeing is usually very good, so I should have no problem.

A very small one which needs good seeing. A bit too low for the T1000 (bellow 40°). I’ll pass.

Cheers.

There are so many galaxies in the northern hemisphere that are in the 100-300 million light year range that have at best one or no images of them on Astrobin. Probably because most of the massive light buckets that routinely publish on AB are in Chile and Namibia.

I finally bagged the little bugger:

NGC_1797_4h_drz2x DcAlfGcIsSpccHtNx3GhsSx_CtChdriLheCs-AP-zoom-in-2.pngI only got 4 hours out of two nights, but APP pulled it off again and produced a lovely Drizzle stack.

The full image and data are here: https://app.astrobin.com/u/Z3ph0d?i=iy93s0

This spiral arms are really funky. NGC 1799 is definitely the culprit.

Woah nice! It really has a small apparent size!

Thanks, Salvatore!

I did have to use both HDR multiscale transform and LHE in PI to draw out the details in the core, but there were definitely details hiding in there!

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. It is tiny, but you got some great detail out of it!
