Help with dust on QHY600M sensor after cleaning attempt

Seeking advice regarding dust on QHY600M sensor and sensor window.

This is one of those “The enemy of good is better” stories. I am truly embarrassed and feeling very sad.

Several days ago I noticed ice crystals on my QHY600M sensor window. So I used the desiccant tube to dry out the sensor chamber. Afterwards, I noticed a dark blob in lights and flats. It was large, irregular, and very dark, so I figured it was most likely the black foam that is present inside the sensor chamber to (ironically) keep dust out of the chamber when the desiccant tube is placed. I opened the sensor chamber and discovered that the black foam was, in fact, brittle and crumbling. So I removed the foam (I’m using a small piece of PEC-PAD in the desiccant tube instead). I cleaned the sensor, sensor window (outside and inside surfaces) and reassembled. Now, instead of one large spot I have dozens of smaller, lighter spots. I tried several times and this Lum Flat represents the best I can get. Unfortunately, even though it looks spotless immediately after cleaning (looking through magnified loops), dust accumulates on the sensor and window while I’m reassembling everything. The smaller, darker spots are likely on the sensor. The medium sized spots are on the sensor window, and the few large spots are on the filter.

From looking at the flat, does it appear that the dust is significant enough to affect images and should I send the camera to QHYCCD to be cleaned?

Thank you,

Robert

I think the first question is, as always, does it calibrate properly?

Good question, Tony. I just finished “cleaning” it today and haven’t had the opportunity to take any lights. I’m wondering if it’s worth testing or does it look so bad that I should just send it in?

In these cases the best course of action is to have it cleaned by a professional, you don't have a dust-free chamber and the attendant apparel. Or directly to QHY and bear the annoyance. This stuff is most likely to move around quite unpredictably.

Totally agree here. Given your situation, with that foam being brittle and breaking, I would have it serviced and cleaned at a dedicated full-service camera store (if there’s one in your city/town). They would have the proper cleanroom, equipment, and supplies to handle the issue. If you don’t, I would send it back to QHY for service and cleaning.

It’s certainly worth a try. If it does calibrate you’ll can be a bit more selective about when you send it in.

You’re right about the particles moving around. If they moved after a meridian flip, calibration flats would be useless.

I worry that the brittle foam has probably fragmented in other hard to reach places and may randomly show up in different places on the flats. I suppose they could calibrate out, but they may move freely and unpredictably.

I agree. I think my best option is to send it to QHYCCD for cleaning.

They might or they might not, probably depends on handling more then anything else.
