Wolfgang Promper’s entire gallery is posted on tonight’s feed, or at least a major portion of his work is shown. It appears to be chronological, and you can see his progress through time. I took the opportunity to bookmark numerous of his images as examples of excellence and also goals to strive for. It’s worth your time to view his images.

It appears to be arranged from newest to oldest.

Hello Dale,

What is tonight’s feed? Where can I see it exactly?

Thanks,

Hello and good morning

I just got up an saw this to my surprise, I feel a bit honoured😀

Not sure if I ever introduced myself but this is a good oportunity to do so.

Astronomy was always present in my life since my father showed me the southern milkyway in Wodonga Australia when I was about 4 years old . We later moved to Austria and I got my first 114mm reflector in 1973 but it was not until 20years later in 1993 that I started to dabble in astroimaging of course with film these days. In the early 2000´s when the first CCD´s came out I was totally hooked and amazed what is possible from a super light polluted backyard. I still have some of the images on my old website so if someone wants to have a look then scroll down to the images taken with the C8 ore a small newtonian: http://www.astro-pics.com/images.htm

Things have changed a lot since these days and especially having a remote observatory at a pristine site is super exciting. The nice thing about it is not only the sky quality but more the amount of data you get to work on and practise always makes you better. There have been times when I had nothing to work on for months and then I noticed that I really get rusty.

For me the most important thing is to do the whole package, so I planned my observatory, set it up myself and for sure do all the maintenace that is necessary as I love working on the equipment.

I know that these days the bias is very much on image processing but too me that is just a small part of the hobby.

The most important thing for me is to have fun and enjoy it, the excitement when collecting data and getting a connection to what I just image is still amazing.

Cheers

Wolfgang

Hi Dale,

if you're talking about the feed below, it includes images with recent activities including likes/bookmarks/comments.

If somebody just discovered Wolfgang and went thru all his images to give them a like, for a few minutes indeed Wolfgang's images would dominate the feeds.

As there are about 15,000 likes per day on AstroBin, very soon other images would get intermingled.

I do have an item on my list to throttle things a little to prevent this occasional monopoly on the feed, but since it's a rare occurrence this hasn't been high on my priority list.

Hope this helps!

Salvatore (owner and developer of AstroBin)

Thanks for your story Wolfgang! I feel very fortunate to call you a good friend and your work is always an inspiration.

Even a casual look through Wolfgang’s gallery demonstrates that the quality and consistency of his work makes him one of the very best imagers in the world. Frankly, I’m still hoping to produce an image as good as one of Wolfgang’s!

I’m not sure that I understand what “tonight’s feed” means but it makes me think that it would be an interesting feature on AB to have a “Gallery Spotlight” that might appear once every month to highlight various imagers and their work. The challenge would be to figure out how to determine where to shine the spotlight. Perhaps participants could submit requests to the IOTD team and they could make the selection. I personally can think of at least a dozen imagers, along with Wolfgang, who would be deserving of such an honor.

Hi Dale, friends, and @Wolfgang Promper

This afternoon (while it was still early morning in Europe and Wolfgang hadn’t woken up yet), I was browsing through his AstroBin gallery. I was truly moved by the depth and consistency of his work, so I ended up liking most of his images. As a result, the Activity/Active feed briefly filled up with Wolfgang’s photos—my apologies for the “feed flood.” 😊

By way of context: Wolfgang has kindly been helping me troubleshoot my setup. We had originally planned a technical support session today; however, I’ve been studying the ASA DDM85A operations and preparing on my side to do my best first, so we adjusted the plan and didn’t get on a call today. From where I stand, I feel confident to handle my part as well as I can, and then continue under his guidance.

If I hadn’t read his story here, I was already thinking of reaching out to learn more about this experienced and passionate mentor. I’m truly happy to meet everyone here on AstroBin—and especially to get to know Wolfgang.

And welcome to check my new Forum thread “Alpha’s Gear Wall: Active Setups, Retired Friends & Fun Storieshttps://app.astrobin.com/forum/topic/194143

I hope this is not inappropriate, but I also wanted to seize this unusual opportunity to appreciate Wolfgang’s art.

Like him, I was also drawn to astronomy, and to the aesthetics of it, since before I could read. Only in my case the object of wonder was the (then) recently released “Pillars Of Creation” image from Hubble.

Fast-forward 3 decades, and finally being financially stable enough to enter the hobby in earnest, I find myself the in a similar state of awe by browsing through Wolfgang’s gallery as I did as a child flipping through the pages of my sky atlas books.

Keep up with your inspirational work! I hope one day I’ll be able to achieve something as breathtaking as this picture

With Esteem,
Marco

Great to see you still around, Wolfgang! I always admired your work in the early days of digital in the early 2000s when I was getting into it as well (my username was ricksastro back then). I was out of the hobby for about 18 years until last year, and it’s great to see some familiar names still around and thriving!

I was referring to the activity feed. Sorry for the confusion. Salvatore, thanks for the clarification. I enjoy seeing a large number of images from a single user from time to time. I think your hands off approach to that issue is a good thing.
