In March, I decided to acquire an observatory. My initial preference was for a SkyShed Pod MKII, and I contacted Wayne regarding pricing and shipping. Although he promised to provide a shipping estimate, I never received one despite following up with him several times. After waiting for a month, I turned to an alternative supplier and placed an order with NexDome.

It has been over four months, that order was not fulfilled. I notified my credit card company. NexDome neither responded to my emails nor answered my phone calls. In total, I sent approximately five emails and two or three messages through the website chat system, all of which went unanswered. Lo and behold, after my credit card provider intervened, the company finally replied. The representative apologized and attributed the delay to reasons ranging from my emails being filtered into spam to tariffs. He claimed that the dome was available and that the only remaining requirement was for me to provide my Social Security number for shipping purposes. I responded immediately, but it has now been a two weeks without further communication.

I then reestablished contact with SkyShed, explaining that I had not heard from him since March. Wayne indicated that he had located my original email and promised to provide a shipping estimate within a few days. However, it has now been five days, and I have yet to receive a response.

Given these repeated difficulties, I have concluded that I will likely construct a roll-off roof instead, although I had originally hoped to obtain a dome. It is remarkable that two different suppliers of personal observatories appear to be so overextended that they are unable to provide the very products they advertise.

US (import) tax related? Otherwise does sound dodgy

Yeah, I just checked and apparently you may need to provide a SSN to clear customs for imported shipments…. Maybe new? I’ve placed many international orders and never needed to provide a SSN in the past, at least. In any case, I’d still be pretty wary since you have no idea how protected that information is when you give it to a retailer. Better to have the shipment go to a business and provide their tax identification number instead, if that’s possible.

Cheers,

Scott

Apparently this can happen with shipments over $2500 in value coming into the US.

So has this always been true or is it a result of our new “regime”? It would seem to be a good argument for only buying domes thru a US dealer and perhaps an even better argument for DIY.

Any reason it has to be a dome? Roll-Offs are easier to DIY, look more like normal buildings, and often have better seeing characteristics than a dome.

I suspect it’s because of tariffs but I’m not sure.

I can think of a couple of reasons why a dome might be preferable to a roll off:

Limited space

The need for better wind resistance

Use of an open truss tube in locations that have outdoor lighting you can’t control.

I have a shed style obs, but four separate panels for the roof instead of a roll-off. Not as easy to open/close as a roll-off or dome, but the panels can be configured to provide as much wind protection, or even more.

This made me laugh, I 100% agree that these observatory companies are impossible to get a hold of or provide any kind of support. I struggled over and over with NexDome even though I had 2 of them on my observatory I just built. I didn’t want a roll off to roll out 40+ feet in my yard. Plus I need the wind protection as well.

I ended up built rotator and shutter systems from scratch and ditched the NexDome stuff. There is an open source EzDome software system and it works great over bluetooth rather than RF.

Cost me $100 dollars for 2 domes while these guys wanted me to pay $2k to upgrade the boards I already had bought.

Anyway, I almost died when I heard your original post they wouldn’t reply.

Regardless of what or where I'm planning to purchase a product, and they say they need me to provide a SSN number for any reason, that ends that transaction.
Find one in the US or buy used in the US.
