Seeking Help with Custom Dobsonian Go-To Mount (Orion XX14g Replacement)

Hello,

My name is Michael Teer, and I’m an amateur astronomer in Keller, TX. I currently own an Orion XX14g, but the original Go-To mount/base is no longer functional. Since Orion no longer sells replacement bases or drive components, I am looking for a skilled ATM or fabricator who could build or adapt a Dobsonian base with Go-To capability that will work with my existing optics.

I’m open to:

Having a new Dobsonian base built for a 14" truss tube OTA.
Integrating a ServoCAT or SiTech system into the new base.
Working with someone regionally if possible, to avoid risky shipping of the OTA.

If you know of anyone in the area who has done custom Dobsonian work, or if any group member is experienced in building mounts with Go-To systems, I would greatly appreciate a referral or contact.

Thank you very much for your time and any guidance you can provide.

Clear skies,

Michael

Check with the OnStep group to see whether anyone local may be of help. I'm way too far to be of any practical help.

After several lengthy discussions with Kevin LeGore, Senior Product Specialist at Sky-Watcher, and after exchanging detailed photos and measurements, we confirmed with the Synta factory (which also manufactured the Orion xx14g) that my Orion xx14g optical tube would directly bolt up to the Sky-Watcher FlexTube 350P base.

Sky-Watcher was willing to sell me just the base, which solved a long-standing problem. I’m very thankful for Kevin’s help and wanted the community to know in case anyone else needs replacement parts for an xx14g. It appears these bases are still obtainable through Sky Watcher.

After almost a year and a half without the scope, I’m delighted to have it operational again. The success has also motivated me to upgrade the focuser and to try planetary imaging with the setup.

Thank you for all the help
