I have been trying for months to platesolve any of the three color channels of this image with no success. I tried with both remote and local catalogs (GAIA). The error is the usual

*** Error: Unable to find an initial linear transformation.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

It seems strange to me, I did plate solving without any problems with the default settings

Solved with default settings using GAIA DBs

If I try to solve with the GAIA catalogue i downloaded (up to gdr3sp-1.0.0-04.xpsd) it fails. If i select "Online" and Gaia DR2 it solves. Checking at the star magnitudes in the image with ASTAP, my best guess is that most of the stars are fairly dim and PI cannot find enough stars in the area to do a plate solve if you select the downloaded catalogue?

I'm assuming you're using Pixinsight, any time I've had problems this script has bailed me out. Seti Astro's Blind Solver 2000. Found with a ton of his other great scripts at his repository: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/setiastro/pixinsight-updates/main/

Solved without issues with local GAIA catalogues.

I downloaded your file and had no problems plate solving in PI using the supplied information. I have had quite a few of my mine that I couldn't plate solve as well though. I was not able to find a reason why on mine.

damn this worked like a charm. Thanks a lot!

Do not understand you difficulties I solved this image without any difficulties. Check if Astrometry's path to GAIA remains valid and you have star data baises available

Plate solving requires GAIA files dr3 not dr3sp, which are for use with SPCC

Did you try to "Search" for the name of the object?
This often makes it possible for the IS to solve the file.
If i do the "Search" for the NGC 3521 - the IS easily resolves the PHOTO.

Maybe you only installed the dr3 catalog. You need to install the complete dr3 catalog and the complete dr3/sp catalog. I had the same problem, but after fully installing the catalogs, the error was resolved.

I had the same experience of others. PI plate solved the image without problem. NGC 3521 as the central galaxy.

Just FYI and maybe not related but until the most recent major PI release, My images would solve with every filter but the green. Very Odd. After the new version it now works with all filters. No idea why.

Perhaps the plate solve  don't support drizzle or distortion correction. Are you sure that your picture is linear.
by the way , if you necessite a plate dolve. You can use a script, I think there is a lot of  différents way to solve it.

I solved the problem by first doing the plate solve with the ASTAP program and then setting Pixinsight's Image Solve to the following mode: On line Catalog must be selected, then Gaia Dr2 and reporting the coordinates provided by Astap.

Let me be one more data point of success solving your image with no issues at all! Great data btw! 🙂

Check your GAIA configuration.  GAIA takes two sets of data files: DR3 and DR3/SP.  The first set is used for plate solving, the SP set includes spectral data for color calibration.  If you assign one set of files to the other list, it causes glitches on some images.

If the configurations above are in place and you still have a thorny plate solve, something to try is enabling exhaustive star matching (under Advanced Parameters).
