I am new to astronomy and finding the learning curve rough.   It doesn't help that I a am perpetual penny pincher (will always try save a buck). Luckily, I live in an area where the locals are referred to as Schwabe, and seems to be a way of life.

I now have a collection of cheap / 2nd hand stuff and have spent enough that would have been better to get something decent. The Mrs might also be less concerned about the tripods sprouting if I followed this route.

I like visual but tring my hand at basic photography with an older DSLR. But the gear is not quite right and by gear I fully mean me, and my understanding.

Greetings

Welcome to AB,  take your time to learn to use the gear you have, before you move on to more sophisticated and expensive equipment.
In this hobby there is always something to use savings on, and it can actually very wise to be a penny pincher.

Welcome Paula to Astrobin

The hobby is a drain on the wallet for sure and one needs to maximise the budget as much as possible !

Alles Gute und viel Spaß !
