Dear AstroBinners,

I have a Celestron 4se Mak

I also have the INNOREL RT55C carbon fiber tripod.

It has a 3/8 screw on top

I want to use my 4se as a camera lens for fast moving objects like planes - so I need some mount that would allow me to pan it quickly and smoothly while being compact.

I used to have a Star Adventurer 2i but its too bulky as I dont need tracking.

Any recs?

If unmotorised, any decent video head would do. Manfrotto heads are highly rated while less expensive than other ones . If motorized and with stabilization then the best choice would be a motorized gimbal which can be pretty expensive. DIJ RS 4 Pro is good up to 10 punds of payload.

Which Manfrotto model would you reccomend? At 1325mm it would be nice to have some handle for precise pointing.

Also, as for motorized ones, are there any cheap alterantives to DJI RS 4 Pro? Motorized ones sounds nice, only if it wasnt so expensive.

That's the inexpensive one.

I used the 4SE for aviation for a long time, infact I put my 8HD on the 4SE mount, and it worked just fine.  Just set slew to speed 9 and time your shots in an intercept window, speed 9 is fast enough to track any aircraft close to the ground at slower speeds- the only problematic aircraft you'll find are your fighters, as long as their either low and slow, or high and fast, you'll be fine, mid altitude and fast is where it gets tricky.

UPS 767 at about 35,000 ft, 25-40 mi away (betting on the closer end) through the Edge HD 8 a few years ago, slightly out of focus (you can tell by the donut reflections on the engine intakes

Your biggest issue you will find is focus. The 4SE is very soft focused for terrestrial targets, so use some kind of peaking setting to get focus. My biggest issue using it as a lense is that the focus with planes is dynamic, and so even setting focus on something far away results in a blurry image. you have to pre-set focus based on distance, and over time you'll get better and better at pre-setting it as an aircraft approaches.

You've reawakened this for me and I think I'm going to go out and try it again. Thanks!

Very cool! How doable is it to manually track aircraft?

It becomes second nature once you get the groove on, speed 6 is usually the sweet spot for high altitude, far away, speed 7 for cessna, 8 for your regional jets and airliners on approach, and 9 for your fast movers. Just pivot your thumb on two buttons and its easy.

look for either Innorel RT90C or ZWO TC40 they both are good and I have both and happy with them!

I have only the 4se OTA thats the thing

So it has a 1/4 screw at the bottom

and tripod has the 3/8 screw

So I need something in between

I dont have the default 4se mount

*Look for clones of the same or in the 2nd hand market, which is where I picked it up (and I didn't pay 200 USD either).

Star Sense Explorer mount works just fine if you can get one. Cheap, sturdy, and very smooth.
