C8 owners who use the ZWO EAF

evaluate the backlash and set in the ASI or other Software……….
At the beginning I struggled a bit with the EAF because I did not use the originsl washer under the EAF mounting part, that made a focusing impossible.
I followed a yt clip and that was the mistake.
After correct installation the EAF worked good.
You have to adjust the travel increments……………you try .

It's easy to measure electronic focuser backlash. Tape a stick, straw, whatever you can find to the focuser knob. Run the EAF in one direction and observe the motion of the pointer. Now reverse direction starting with very small increments. At first you won't see any motion because of backlash. Keep repeating this process with larger and larger increments until you see motion. Make a note of how many steps that was, that's your backlash.

I'm quite confident that you, if running an Asiair at least, don't need to apply any backlash values because the computer will sort it automatically during the AF routine. I don't have a link on hand just now, but the information comes straight from ZWO and their forums. There are backlash settings but I've just figured they were for manual focus, just like the step sizes you can enter, which are also for manual focus. I don't know NINA so I can't speak for how it works there or elsewhere.
I've got two Asiairs and two EAF's and I'm using them with refractors, lenses and an E8HD. I've not touched the backlash settings and it works perfectly as is.

I always use the autofocus routine and you only need to set the step size and whether to go in reverse for it to work properly. I do not remember what is the proper reverse setting so you will have to Google that info. The backlash is only for using the manual adjustments. I only use manual adjustments to get it close to focus and then run the autofocus routine.
