Hi all,

I am having ongoing problems with the Digital Loggers web power switch.   Are there any other companies making these remote power switches?

Thanks,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

these also work normally and much simpler UI https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/smart-plug/

I use quite of few of them in the observatory.

Just check how much power will you be drawing for the exact model you will need.

Hope it helps,
Luka

Hi Luka,

Can this device work remotely?  I'm some 900 miles away from my telescope and need to be able to turn gear off an on remotely from a Windows desktop computer.

As long as they are connected to the network you can turn it off/on via an app.

So yes they work remotely smile

I’ve run these for years without any problems. What is the switch doing?

The main problem is I can't log on to the web page to turn the WPS off and on.   I can't ping it either.  I've been in touch with DLI support and they installed the latest firmware because I was also have trouble with the outlet switches, they would not turn on or off and did not reflect the true state of the device.  I think that's been solved with software,  but the continuing problem is being able to access the webpage from which I turn the outlets on and off.

I had similar issues with a brand new one. It worked fine for several months and then started acting up in a very similar way. A physical power down/power up would fix it (fortunately it was the one in my backyard roll-off, not at the remote site) only to have it act up again within a day or so. I replaced it with another identical DLI and that works fine. It is now back at DLI for warranty repair. Almost certainly bad hardware as a firmware update took but did not fix the problem.

I would point out that there are other brands out there but DLI is one of the few that have ASCOM divers so can be automated from most astronomical software.

This is the only one I have had do this and I have owned a half dozen over the years. I have had them die completely before (but after years of use) and have had individual outlets stop working, but this is the first time I have seen this behavior. I suspect a bad batch of them. I bought mine from Amazon (drop shipped from DLI)  in July.

Thanks Bill. That's exactly what's been happening with the WPS I have. It works then doesn't, we turn it off and back on and it works for a while then it doesn't.

I'm going to replace it, I'm missing too many clear nights..

It does sound the same.  I have an earlier production run of the same model at the remote site that has worked fine for three years  and so far the new one is working (although I have only had it for about 3 weeks).

What did DLI say about this?

The tech at DLI installed the latest firmware, but that didn't fix it.  He also made some software changes but to no avail.

I would press them to replace it. I’ve never had this issue and I know of hundreds of these switches in use that run perfectly. Sounds like this one is defective.

Yes, I've come to same conclusion.
