Hello fellow nerds, I have a Bushnell ares 5, it's pretty much just a rebranded Sky Watcher Heritage 130P/AWB Onesky and I was wondering how good it would be for deep sky. I put it on my Star Adventurer GTI and it supports the scope very well. I want to use it until I get a Skywatcher 130PDS. The only issue I really see with using this scope is helical focusing.
If anyone has attempted using this kind of scope for deep sky, please let me know. I am planning on using an ASI294MC Pro with it.

Two problems I see here. First, the mounting for the focuser looks pretty flimsy. It might be ok for visual but once you start stacking an imaging train on this, it might flex. The second issue is the open truss design. Without some kind of a shroud you are going to have all kinds of issues with stray light. I don't see the helical focuser as unworkable as long as it has a lock. at F/5 and a 1/3 sensor you will have a noticeable amount of coma in the corners so a coma corrector would certainly be helpful but since a decent one would cost as much as the scope you can fix that sort of thing in software these days. Since it's the scope you have, give it a go, just know it's not optimal.
