Hello all!

My name is Lachlan and I am a 16-year-old (very) amateur astrophotographer (as you might have figured). I started this hobby nearly 2 years ago when I received a telescope from a school fete and got bored by looking at stuff in the sky. All I could see were stars and planets! I started using my family Canon 70D on a tripod to capture the Milky Way. As everyone knows, I just went further into debt with my parents buying more and more equipment, having only today bought the ASI533MC Pro. Still using a Canon lens, my next saving project is to get a decent telescope. I am currently using the (not yet arrived) 533MC Pro attached to a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens all on top of an AZEQ5 Mount.

School is the biggest challenge for me in this AMAZING hobby. I normally don't image on a school night, which rules out 5/7 nights of the week. I then work on a Friday, another night gone, (6/7). Then the challenge of clouds, moon, study and sleep, I get a max of 2 images out a month. Wish it could be more, however, school must come first. Hoping to study some sort of astronomy after high school.

I am very grateful to the many friends that have lent me amazing gear to help me work out where I want this hobby to take me.

Clear Skies to everyone!

Hello Lachlan,

a warm welcome from Germany. You will see that Astrobin is _the_ best forum for astrophotography. AP is a great hobby, you will never know enough, always learn something new on a variety of topics ranging from hardware to software. Don't get fooled with the understanding that you need expensive gear to do AP. You can do amazing things with modest gear and learn the tricks of the trade.
Stay curious and

Hi Gernot,

It is indeed amazing what you can do with modest gear. I still sometimes look back at what I first took and marvel at how I did it. My first image was of the Orion Nebula, I wasn't even sure I got it at first. Untracked using a 5" Reflector at 900mm. It was very traily at 1s but somehow I got hooked! 3 months of improving my images of Orion Nebula using a tripod and DSLR. Can't wait till the Astro Cam gets here!
