Does anyone have time to tell me to use PixInsight to process the data?
Tony Gondola avatar
I doubt that anyone does. It's a very deep and non-intuitive program. However, there are tons of tutorials on YouTube that will get you started. Once you get into the basics, this is the place to ask a specific question. I don't know what your experience level is but if you are a beginner I would suggest starting with Siril first. It's free and will quickly and easily get you started in processing you data.

Thanks for telling me about this, do you have time to teach me how to use Siril? I know YouTube tons of tutorials. But I'd prefer to have a senior who can teach me

Maybe you can share some video URLs that you think are good for beginners.
thanks you

Hi Kayla, as said there are plenty of free YouTube channels, but if you're looking for a comprehensive and in-depth learning experience, I highly recommend: https://www.adamblockstudios.com/ He offers various PixInsight learning subscriptions, though they are not free.

Kayla, there is a group called Masters Of Pixinsight (https://www.mastersofpixinsight.com/) that have lots of really good info for beginners (and advanced users). They have a Beginner workshop series as well as a free 6-step workflow on their website to get you going.  I have learned a lot from them, as well as they have 1 on 1 personal training.  check them out.

I learned the basics with this video fro Cuiv the lazy Geek:

The rest I just explore on my own and with the help of Google. I think that is a big part of the fun.

My personal suggestion is to buy @Adam Block's  ”Fast Track” tutorial package. It relatively inexpensive and you get one of the leading processing experts expertise. I personally have it and also got the fundamentals as well.

Just my 2 cents is all.

Hi

You can now download the first capsule from the PixInsight Software Distribution System

Umm, well your right as far as her profile being basically new or for lack of another word BLANK!

Could possibly be the case!

If you don't have it already, I highly recommend Charles Bracken's book, The Deep-Sky Imaging Primer. In addition to being an overall 101 course in deep sky imaging, it has very digestible introductions to processing software, PixInsight included.

Pixinsight is a large and complex software package.  It has literally hundreds of components and thousands of options.  That said, if you learn to use about a dozen areas, you can do pretty well with just those.  Then later you can branch out and explore more of its interior features and options. For me, the normal process is something like this:
  1. Collect a number of images of the same target, one after another
  2. Each might be a 2 minute exposure and maybe you collect 20
  3. Stack those images into a single image using the WBPP package in PI
  4. Use ScreenTransferFunctron and HistogramTransformation functions to process
  5. Save the result
  6. Use the RC-Astro packages NoiseXterminator and BlurXterminator to improve result
  7. Save
  8. Post process in external photo editor for brightness and other basic minor changes

With just those steps, you can do a lot.

Other useful tools are:
AutomaticBackgroundExtactor
CurvesTransformation
Resample
DynamicCrop

PI is not cheap and the RC-Astro packages are like $100 each, but I think they are well worth it.

What's curious is that if you search for this profile in the astrophotographers list, you can't find it. What you find instead is one with a similar name which is actually not a profile but... an advertising to dental care :-)

It seems that someone is testing some sort of AI against this site.

You’re right this is very odd indeed. I wonder if we should mention this to @Salvatore Iovene

David, you are not being rude. I understand why you said that. I came here because my friend recommended it to me. I am very happy to be here and have met a lot of enthusiastic people who have given me a lot of advice and help and I have learned a lot here. With the help of my friends, I am learning to process data with PixInsight and am currently learning the steps to stretch an image and then process Ha and Lum.
Maybe you will ask what equipment I am using and I can tell you I don't have any at the moment. I am a beginner and I was drawn to astrophotography as a hobby by the fascinating photographs. My friend is teaching me to get involved in the data processing of his shots and I think my first one will be posted soon.
The reason I'm talking to you so much is to show you that I'm not a phony, and time will tell.
