Hi,

Based on your experiences, what spec of gpu is the minimum needed to use this software to the extent you require?

Thanks

For cuda a 1060 is probably minimum.

The difference a 1060 provides is significant so I agree that is a good minimum. I built myself a new processing PC and upgraded my 1060 to a 4070 TI and that really bumped the performance up even more. My PC runs BXT and StarX more than fast enough to meet my needs so I think upgrading to a 4080 or 4090 wouldn't make enough of a difference to be justifiable.

I would add a caveat that this opinion probably caps out to APS-C image sizes. I'm guessing that the ultra high end cards make a significant difference for anyone churning through the mega file sizes from full frame sensors.

Agreed. I just went from a 3060 to a 4080 and performance was better but only took BXT times for an APS-C from around 30 sec to around 20 or so.  Not worth it for that.  I did it mainly for gaming performance, however. The 4000 series may also may require a bigger PSU, depending on what you have. PCPartPicker can do an estimate for you.

If  I did not care about gaming, I would get a 3060 or 3070 and maybe even wait until the 5000 series comes out and get a 3000 series. They are now in the mid 300 range and would come down even more.

Last I checked, AstroPixelProcessor (look at the forum this is in) does not use the GPU for anything except smooth rendering of the UI. No actual number crunching is done, a discrete GPU isn't needed for APP.

If you're buying with an eye on the future, all GPU acceleration of Tensorflow on Windows is in limbo as far as the future goes, with the exception of WSL2. Caveat Emptor

For APP, nothing. To accelerate the RC Astro plugins for PixInsight, A GTX 970 or GTX 980 with 4gb of ram is a minimum with a 6gb GTX 1060 or 8gb GTX 1070 offering better performance for a small difference in price.

I'm glad your 4070 is an improvement over your 1060.
