Jupiter & Derotation software? - Forums

Hello All!

I’ve been doing some imaging of Jupiter as well as reading a bit on de rotating the AVI or SER video file somehow in a software program. I’m currently using AutoStakertt for the analysis & processing of my Jupiter and moon images and then go to Registax for sharpening etc. From there I go to Gimp for final adjustments. After reading the theory on this de-rotation of the video file, it makes a lot of sense to me as to why I can’t get many features to come out crisp an clear. It’s like I can only get to a certain point and then its the end and I can’t get anything more out of the image.
Anyway my question is really to do with Jupiter and what program does this “de rotation” of the frames? I’m far from an expert with AutoStackertt but I don’t see where there is a de-rotation option is in there?

Also seeing as though I’m talking about AutoStakertt, is there a way for me to take and combine a certain number of images in each of the 4 parts of the analysis and combine them into just `1 image instead of 4 different images “1 for each section you specify”

Hi Dale,

The software you need is Winjupos. http://jupos.org/gh/download.htm

It allows you 2 strategies: 1) creating an image in Autostakkert for each short Jupiter film and then derotating it with Winjupos 2) joining for example the short films with PIPP (or shooting a longer one), derotating the film with Winjupos and then making an image from it in Autostakkert.

It is important and easier to use set your capture software for the use of Winjupos names (precise date and universal time UT in the file name).

Winjupos can stack and derotate a series of images too, corresponding to your series of Jupiter films. It will make a final derotated image additioning the information from all of them and improving the details.

Thank you Bogdan! Sound like this is what I’m looking for!
It also sounds like it quite involved and complicated??? I’ll have to do some research on this more and maybe find some YouTube videos!

Not really complicated, especially for Jupiter. What makes life easier is selecting the Winjupos name in your capturing software for you film files. If not you have to do it manually in Winjupos and it's more time consuming. Introduce youre precise Lat and Long for the capturing location.

You have to let Winjupos know exactly where the planet is on the image, so you will have to superpose the contour on the exact surface locations. It has an automatic match for Jupiter which makes it much more easier than for Mars for ex. You just need to read a bit about it and watch a tutorial.

Sound complicated to me, I use SharpCap so I don't know if I'm able to specify this Winjupos in it or even where I'd do that in SharpCap if I can. I'll defiantly need to watch some YouTube videos thats for sure because I'm just not that smart!

I've spend a dozen minutes once flipping and turning a Io and Jupiter image because it just did not fit with the satellite position and the surface characteristics only to find out that I used a wrong date format (06 August instead of August 06…

. You never have that problem if the software writes it down from the beginning.

WinJupos Saturn derotation - relatively easy to do image derotation as the rings make obvious anchor points. Still a bit tricky, but doable.
Jupiter - I get better results with video derotation, but probably not more than a 6 min video. In good seeing I compared result of a 3 min good segment out off the 6 minutes with deretating the whole video and the result was the same.
Video derotation is processor intensive, but less error-prone on Jupiter low contrast details.

Hi,

didn't read full thread. But when using for exam ple SharpCap and WINJUPOS compatible names you have to know something.

You will get a name like: 2023-09-11-0014_7

If you now stack it with AS!3 you will get with standard setting this name for example: 2023-09-11-0029-3-l5-ap159-Drizzle15
The problem is the underline between minute 29 and second 3!!! WINJUPOS will not recognize it and it will set to 0. So if you have 2 images of 30seconds it both are in minute 29, WINJUPOS will not derotate both.

You change the settings in AS!3 (Stackname options->field delimeter) from "_ "to "-"

AutoStakkert! is a popular software tool for planetary image stacking, but it doesn't have built-in de-rotation capabilities. To de-rotate your Jupiter videos, you would typically need to use a separate software specifically designed for planetary image processing.
