Park Position for Newton Telescope - which is the better one?

Hello all,

I have my own garden observatory and I have a setup with a Newton telescope Vixen R200SS.

The usual parking position I know is to point the telescope at Polaris. But this doesn't work for a roll-on-roll-off observatory.

I am wondering which is the best parking position:

a) telescope pointed at zenith, with the advantage that the mirror is horizontal. The disadvantage is a torque moment on the eyepiece focuser due to the relatively large QHY 600 camera.

b) Telescope pointed at the northern horizon and the eyepiece focuser with the camera pointing vertically downwards. The advantage is that there is no torque on the eyepiece focuser.  The disadvantage is a vertically oriented mirror that may be subject to movement and misalignment.

What do you think is the best position?

a) which is incidentally mine own for my 12". There is no issue with side loads on the focuser, that is what they are designed for.

Thanks, that’s a good argument

As long as your gear is balanced, park position is usually the safest position to clear the roof

Agreed here, I have my 12” f5 newt on my AP1200GTO and if I was to point it at the NCP it would collide with the roof. For me it don’t matter where I point it but my usual park position is lightly ENE where I have 3-4” clearance between the roof and OTA. My scope isn’t parallel with the horizon but close, maybe 10º or so.

In a parked position, there shouldn't be any issues. Unless it is one of moving around in the observatory. I have a dome, so can point the EQ and 12" newt to NCP without any issues. Actually any other position would be movement issue inside the dome. I wouldn't sweat it.
