Hello All,
I thought I’d start this topic after searching for plugin’s for Gimp. I know most of you use PS & Pix Insite but some of use don’t use the subscription based editing software. I thought those of us that use Gimp with plugins could all share it hear for each other and of course I’m looking for good ones that others have used and feel are useful.

Here is what I’m using now.

Gimp 2.1.0. Windows 10  64bit
Py-Astro plugin.  https://stargazy.weebly.com/pyastro-for-gimp.html

I’m personally looking for a good Astro plugin for gradiant removal other then the normal Gimp routine that is used to create a synthetic flat.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions and sharing your experiences with your plugin’s.

Hi Dale,

I use Gimp 2.10 on a Linux operating system and added the function of a wavelet denoise filter which was not incuded in the Linux version.

Perhaps it is already integrated in your Windows version of Gimp.

Thanks Harald, I’ll have to look. I have some denoise functions but I’ll look and see if the “wavelet” is in there and will report back!

Hello Harald,
So I checked and I didn't see the Wavelet denoise in my windows version. I'd be interested in how I can obtain it and give it a try.

I also added a new set of plugin's as well.  I've read about this plugin but haven't had time to play with it yet.  I included the link if your interested in it.

I process images in GIMP as my primary platform as well.  However, I go outside GIMP for noise reduction, sharpening, and gradient removal.  For gradient removal, I prefer Regim by Andreas Roerig, which I have found to do a better job than any other free program, even if it's really tedious to set a bunch of background points manually.  For noise reduction, I use Noiseware Pro Edition (about $50).  For removing green noise or green artifacts, I use the Remove Green Noise function in Siril (free).  For wavelet sharpening and deconvolution, I use MLUnsold ImagesPlus, which is now available for free.  It also has a star size reduction routine that beats anything I can do in GIMP.

I know it's convenient to keep everything in GIMP and work with plugins, but when there are free programs available that do certain "processing tricks" better, faster, or more easily than the GIMP plugins, I'm willing to export a TIF file and then re-open it in GIMP to finish up.

as I installed this extension from a Linux source I don't know a site which offers a Windows version,
think you will find one with google or similar.

After installing you will find it under "Filter > Enhance > Wavelet denoise"

When using I check "All channels" and "preview" and set "softness" to zero.

@rhedden thank you for all those idea’s! I’ve gotten used to the synthetic flat process in Gimp and while it isn’t perfect it works ok for me. I’d love to try something that does a much better job and have no problems using other programs to do so. I’m such a nob trying to learn these processing techniques that I’m trying for the easiest way to do things. 

I’m going to look into your suggestions fore both noise and the gradient removal! Is it a fairly easy process to use the gradient removal tools?

Siril does everything you are looking for and much more. It is a free program as well and operates on RAW files. My workflow is Siril => Gimp using Gimp for final cleanup of the image only.

For planetary image post processing in Gimp I can recommend the G'mic plugin:

It has a huge collection of filters, some of which I use all the time now, such as unsharp mask (way better & more options than the standard filter in gimp), local histogram optimization, Ians noise reduction etc.

Siril does everything you are looking for and much more. It is a free program as well and operates on RAW files. My workflow is Siril => Gimp using Gimp for final cleanup of the image only.

Hello @JD_Bugs You know I have thought about that program, but in reading it stated that it runs scripts, and I don’t understand what that is or means. I’m used to clicking on a item and it doing what it says noise reduction, curves etc... so I guess that I don’t understand how that program works.

Any insight is fully welcome JD!

Thanks for this! I’ve read about that plugin but didn’t hear a whole lot of how it works and if its worth while.  I’m really glad that I posted this topic. Not only am I learning here but hopefully it will help others that use Gimp as well!

How is the install with G’mic Wilco? Easy?

By "scripts" they just mean that you can bundle the processes (workflow) that you use for a particular type of data into a "script" that you can use the next time you process that same data type. Sort of like the old "macros" of ancient pc times. I personally don't use scripts because I like to see what's happening at each stage but I think power users probably do use them to speed up data processing. You certainly don't need to use scripts to use the program. There are some very good YouTube videos re: Siril as well. Since the program is fairly new I suspect that more and more folks in the "open source" free software community will gravitate towards it in time.

Hi Dale, G'mic has a windows installer. Make sure you have gimp 2.10 installed and run the G'mic installer, it will be added as a plugin under the filters menu.
As for linux or mac I have no experience with it.
