Hi, my name is Marcos, I live in Southeastern Brazil under Bortle 4-5 skies, in a town called Petrópolis just off Rio de Janeiro.

I have just started learning AP. I have learned a lot of theory and bought some gear but have hardly practiced anything at all due to cloudy nights.

On the very few clear nights I had I was able to do a few polar alignments (with Asiair Pro) and did one guided session just to learn the process, not aiming at anything specific and using a wide angle lens.

All this was enough to get acquainted with walking noise and learn why that happened. The best way to learn is really practicing and making lots of mistakes – they are among the best teachers, I think.

I learned the basic steps to stack dark, bias and light frames in DeepSkyStacker and now I’m waiting for some clear skies to try the first images using a DSLR, a telephoto lens and a tracker.

I’m not new to telescopes (I build my first telescope 20 years ago, an 8” Dobsonian, useless for AP but great for observation) and have some experience with DSLR photography, especially landscape. Now with all this travel limitation AP was the natural next step and I’m glad I have tons of things to learn to keep my mind busy for years with something other than work.

I also tend to write a lot, so I’d better stop here. 😊

Hope to learn a lot here, contribute with what I learn and hopefully with images soon.

Cheers and Clear Skies.

Bom dia Marcos.  Welcome and clear skies to you!  I started back in January, so I am fairly new to the hobby and astronomy in general.  I've never been to where you live, but I am looking forward to being able to travel to Brazil for work again.  Work normally takes me to the northern parts of the State of São Paulo up to the State of Goiás.

Oi Marcos, que legal. Welcome to the AB web, many nice and useful discussions are to be found in the Forum threads, as it seems that in AP you never end learning new things, but also there is an exchange of ideas and knowledge. You will certainly enjoy the nice images from the abundant quantity of AP's that are uploaded daily. In those images, quite often, the authors also include a lot of useful details and techniques used on the capture, beyond the minimum information that you are asked to fill in.
So, CS and have fun.

Oi Alex, thanks for your message!
It sounds promising, you'll be under Bortle 2 and 1 up in the northern part of São Paulo and up to Goiás.
Anyway, what's holding me from advancing in the hobby is week after week of overcast skies. I wonder if it has always been like this and I had never noticed.
CS and happy trips.

Oi Claudio, thanks for your message and tips.
Well, this is really great for any beginner so we can try to recreate the conditions to get similar results.
Abraço and CS.

Oi Marcos, welcome to this awesome hobby, say goodbye to your money and to a good night sleep… 🤣
Funny, I asked my wife yesterday, if it's been always this overcast at this time of the year and I never noticed before or just because I started on the AP hobby recently. She says, it's not what she remembers from recent years… Just bad luck, I guess…

Hi Willy, thanks for your reply.

Well, tell me about it, it's all so expensive (here in Brazil) because of taxes. If we're lucky, we pay "just" 60% over the price+delivery. Now, if it's sent through fedex there's more and we end up paying twice as much, it's crazy. Now, if we're really, really lucky, some parts may be overlooked by the customs if they come from China, it's happened once or twice.

Now, yes, I'll make friends with owls and bats, I guess.

CS.

I know all about Brazilian taxes… I live in Texas, but I was born and raised in São Paulo.

Hello Marcos, welcome to Astrobin! I live in Pindamonhangaba SP, and I have all the odds an AP would not like…extreme light pollution, no money, minimal spare time….but with one advantage which surpass all this issues - an huge passion for the night sky… !

All my best to you around this amazing site!
