Hi all,

I started Astrophotography last year, which by far is the best hobby I've ever taken up in my life. I let visual go as I concentrated on astrophotography and, plus, it became too damn cold in the mountains of Western North Carolina to endure shivering in front of an eyepiece. I was just getting going targeting with a Telrad when I stopped and only put out astro rigs where I could see stuff and monitor progress on my iPad in the warm comfort of my living room.

Then warmer weather came in the last couple of weeks so last Friday night I left the Dob in the garage and decided to try the AZ-EQ5 with an ES AR152 to do some visual while testing out 2 Astro rigs. Before this, I'd had the 8" out twice and used a Telrad to find targets a couple of times.

But the AZ-EQ5…Talk about a religious experience…the AZ-EQ5 was super accurate and sturdy after alignment and helped me see more targets than I've ever seen before in one night, from globular clusters to galaxies to the Ring and Dumbbell nebulae. That mount combined with that scope took my breath away.

I still have more, way more, to learn about the sky but, man, using a sturdy Alt/Az mount to traverse the skies was freakin outstanding. Definitely, a night to remember (beyond marrying my wife, my two children being born, etc., LOL.)

I can't wait to get that mount out again. But, alas, the weather has been HORRIBLE here in Western NC. Truly depressing. I don't see a clear night in the forecast, AT ALL. Ugh.

Anyway, the AZ-EQ5 has been a good mount for Astro, too. A very good purchase and highly recommended.

Clear skies and cheers!

The Skywatcher EQ6 is also very good for its price.

And our hobby is indeed great, rewarding and addictive.

Thanks Rob.  I have that mount (actually the 6) but only use in EQ mode, both for visual and for imaging.  Are you saying it's a lot easier to use in Alt-az mode for visual?  I hadn't thought seriously about that, and would be happy to change over if it makes such a difference, depending on the type of session.  Do other people change the top piece regularly?

I like it in Alt/AZ mode for visual, IMHO. It's easy to convert from EQ to Alt/Az by leveling the arm 90 degrees and screwing the bolt into secure it. I also put a second scope on the other side for wider field views. If it was hard to change back and forth I wouldn't bother. Yes, I do believe it is easier in Alt/Az than EQ for visual.

Thanks.  Presumably it's also OK for moon, solar and planets, even videoing.

I haven't made it yet, to planetary and lunar but I'd assume EQ is better for that than Alt/Az, right?

Well, I thought if the individual exposures were only small fractions of seconds, wouldn't need EQ?

I'll have to leave that question to someone else. Haven't started planetary and lunar yet. But I'm eager to find out.

Same Telescope, Same Camera, Same Mount, Same Filter--But very different results
A week or so ago I shot this image using an Esprit 100ED, AM5 mount 2600MC camera and an L-Pro filter. I'm happy with the results (M3). But last night I went out to shoot M101 and planned on shooting 5 hours but only got to 3 as the clouds moved ...

RCC - same target, different scopes.
I recently acquired a Vixen Extender for my R200SS, which takes the scope to 1120mm focal length at f/5.6. This was so I could get those lovely little small targets that have always intrigued me. We've had a precious couple of moonless, clear nig...

Imaging at f7.7
I love Vixen stuff…there, I've dealt with that one. I have a R200SS (8" Newtonian) which I really enjoy imaging with, but it must be pushing 15 years old now. The mirror looks great, there's no degradation that I can see, but it...
