ASIAIR Pro Test Drive and Questions

Hi everyone,

First, I would like to thank everyone for the help on setup, cables, and connectivity in the post ASIAIR Pro and Equipment Setup.I finally got to try out my ASIAIR Pro last night and it worked great, just as advertised. Although I did have a few problems. My setup i:
  • WO SpaceCat 51
  • Nikon D5600 DSLR
  • Skywatcher HEQ 5 Pro mount

The first thing that I learned is that my third generation iPad, which is at least six years old, is not up to the task. It takes a long time for the images to load and sometimes it locks up and shuts down the ASIAP app. After about 20 minutes of that, I switched over to my two year-old Android phone and everything worked fine. Some questions that I have based on issues that I encountered during my imaging session:
  • A few times my camera disconnected. I'm not sure if I was too far away from the rig (5G mode) or if it was just a coincidence. Has anyone had similar issues?
  • I noticed that the time stamps for the filenames in the log file are local time, but the file time stamps on the USB stick are UTC. Is there an option to change the time to local time?
  • I was expecting to see NEF files since working with DSLR, but my output files were FIT format. Is there an option to control the file type? I downloaded FITS Liberator to view the FIT files. Normally I just use Adobe Bridge for my Nikon NEF files.
  • I was about half way through my autorun when I noticed that you can specify a delay between images. Originally I was at zero, but then changed it to five seconds. Not sure if I had a buffer issue, but some of my dark files were actually light files. Not sure what happened to the dark file data.

All in all I had a great time with the ASIAIR Pro. Polar alignment was a snap--I was able to get the "smiley face" in about five minutes, plate solving worked, all of my equipment was synched up and communicating, and the target was centered.

Thanks for any assistance.

Best,
Jim

Hi Jim…
I can answer the disconnect problem, the inbuilt wifi on ASIAIR is weak as the aerial is inside the case. If you use the option to connect via your home wifi then it works brilliantly, the ASIAIR only needs to be in range of your strong home wifi signal to work flawlessly with you anywhere in the house, assuming you have decent home wifi…
Kindest Regards

Thanks Olly.

So that would be connecting via Wi-Fi Station mode. My wifi is strong in the backyard so I shouldn't have any problems with connections. I will try it next time.
Thanks for the help.

When you do then ignore the ASIAIR WiFi and as long as you are on the designated WiFi you can just open the App and it will all link up👍🏻

It's been a long time since I used a DSLR with asiair, but I think ZWO doesn't do NEF just RAW set in your camera.

HI Jim,

Its great that you got it working.  As Scott said, ZWO doesn'nt deal with CR2 or NEF… whether I use my Canon 60D or my 2600mc pro, it spits out fit format images.  This is fine if you use some of the bigger processing platforms like Astropixel processor or Pixinsight (which I do, so its all fine) but its not PS friendly.  Another way to approach this is to stack the files in FIT format, and convert that first stretch to something that PS likes, such as TIFF.   There are many workarounds but this has been ok for me.  FIT files are nice because they store some of the metadata which is nice for some processes in certain astro processing software.

I really like my ASIair pro… its a beauty.  It works well with my 3 year old iPad.

Best luck - :^)

Ian,

Thanks for the advice/suggestion. I use DeepSkyStacker which accepts both NEF and FIT files and outputs a TIFF file which I can process in Photoshop. I've been using FIT Liberator to preview the light frames so I know which ones to omit from stacking.

Same here, DeepSkyStacker and save as TIFF for use in Photoshop. I save as 32 bit for initial stretching in Photoshop then convert to 16 bit to open all options for further processing.

You can also go on the ZWO ASI website and download their media software, one is a Fit viewer in ASIStudio (free) and if you use that to open your .fits images you can right click and check the header or even mess around with the histogram stretching and also 'save as" a  .tiff file, which will load in Photoshop.
