What is the main difference between the Skywatcher EQ-5 Pro and the Skywatcher EQM-35 Pro?

So I am quite new to this hobby and started to look for an equatorial mount, I came across the EQ-5 Pro and the EQM-35 Pro but I noticed that both have the same weight capacity and both have a goto controller.

This got me wondering, what mount is better, the EQ-5 Pro or the EQM-35 Pro?

Hi,

The EQM35-Pro  is modular. You can remove the DEC component and have a lighter, RA-only mount similar to the Star Adventurer (and better suited to cameras with smaller lenses). This is the main difference.

As to your other question, the EQM35 is a newer model and has a more precise tracking mechanism. BUT the EQ5 is larger and heavier. Combined with its monolithic (non-modular) design, it should be sturdier. Especially at the upper end of the payload capacity.

I own a EQM35 and it is the mount which surprises me very often. The payload is the same to the EQ5 but you can set up the maximum load capacity to the EQM35 with no impact on the guiding acuracy. I love the EQM35 and use it for mobile astrophotography. Really good tracking with a real payload capacity of 10 kg.

Do you think the EQM35 is able to carry a skywatcher 150PDS (4,9KG) with an DSLR and still track accurately?

Yes, definately. Perhaps you have to adjust the worm drive first. But if there is an issue with the adjustment you can hear it. The adjustment is easy to perform.
