The -L version is a handheld unit and is not connected to a computer.  The -LU version is connected to a computer via a USB cable (thus the U in the  model).  There are in fact several different SQM meters:  including SQM, SQM-L, SQM-LU SQM-LE, SQM-LR and SQM-DL.
