30 Doradus, better known as the Tarantula nebula, is a massive HII region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, located around 160,000 light-years away. There is a star cluster NGC 2070 in its center, which produces most of the energy that makes the whole region visible. It is so bright that if it were located as close as the Orion nebula, it would cast visible shadows.

Within that cluster, there’s R136 region, which is an active stellar nursery with several many thousands contains many thousands of young stars, including several of the largest known.

For me, it is simply mind-boggling that a decent, but still amateur telescope is able to capture such an object outside of our galaxy. It’s also an object that has a special meaning for me. It’s never visible from my home. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to visit San Pedro de Atakama in Chile. The tarantula was the first object I observed through a 70cm newton. It was almost a decade ago, but it feels as if it was yesterday.

This is the first image from my remote telescope in Hakos, Namibia. It’s an RGB+HOO composition. Technically, it’s not good, with many obvious flaws and shortcoming.
