I'm so excited by my new exploration of planetary imaging. I recently showed my first go at Saturn, and now my first go at Jupiter!

Jupiter was 43.5 arc-sec in diameter this night, and a 35 to 37 degrees altitude.
Jupiter’s moon Io is to the left side, and at 1822 km in diameter, covers only 1.1 arc-seconds. The latter compares with my native plate scale (with 2 micron pixels and 1.5X barlow) of 0.18”/px; and a final scale with 1.5X drizzle of 0.12”/px. On that plate scale Io is small, and it is 2nd smallest of Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, but it is larger than our own Luna, and is the 4th largest moon in our solar system. And it is the driest, tortured by over 400 active volcanos.
Not a great place to visit, if you are life.

Processing details

The WinJupos derotation of 10 SER videos of 90 seconds (each 2140 frames of 10 ms at 24 fps). I had not intended to do 16-bit videos, and though I noted the slow frame rate, I assumed it was due to the large image size to include IO. Thus, I left something on the table here, if I had done 8-bit files and a higher frame rate, I think it would have been better.
In AutoStakkert4! is use 1.5x drizzle, 48 align points and in the end 50% of the images, which was at about a 50% quality rating.
To choose the best settings, I used a fixed setting in Registax, not optimized at this point, at 20%, 35% and 50% of frames, all shown below in the top row of images. If anything, the detail was perhaps slightly better at 50% due to less noise, so I stuck with that.
The bottom row was no drizzle with 35% of frames. I found it looked fuzzy. I did have to change the settings in Registax, but whatever I did I did not get it as sharp at 1.5X drizzle. And at the level of fine detail, I found the pixelation was intrusive. Thus, I stuck with 1.5X drizzle.

The WinJupos moon correction feature in the derotation worked great, with a few trials on the size selection around the moon.
In PhotoShop I did final sharpening and noise reduction with Camera Raw, NoiseXterminator, and “Dust and Scratches”, which is very effective for noise (something I picked up from Christopher Go’s videos). Registax does an amazing job with sharpening, but I always find areas that are too noisy and others that are too blurry, so careful use of these other tools was very useful.
