On the night of May 24th, under pristine Bortle 2–3 skies in Argentina, I was enjoying a stargazing session with my girlfriend while running two imaging setups simultaneously. My Sky-Watcher Esprit 100ED was collecting data on the Corona Australis region, while a tracked Sony camera equipped with a 35mm lens was capturing the Milky Way's Galactic Center.

Earlier that night, we had already noticed several meteors crossing the sky. Then, at 3:31 a.m., an exceptionally bright fireball suddenly appeared. It was so luminous that it immediately caught our attention. The object fragmented in a spectacular explosion directly in front of the Galactic Center, leaving behind a persistent glowing trail that remained visible for several minutes. We even managed to photograph the lingering debris cloud with an iPhone before it finally faded away.

The following morning, while reviewing the images from the 35mm camera, I discovered that the entire event had been captured by chance. What we had witnessed with our own eyes was preserved frame by frame against one of the most spectacular regions of the night sky: the heart of our Milky Way.

The fireball displayed a remarkable blue-green glow, a color often associated with high-velocity meteors and the vaporization of magnesium-rich material interacting with Earth's atmosphere. Since the event occurred during the final days of the Eta Aquariid meteor shower and its trajectory appears broadly consistent with the shower's radiant near Aquarius, it is possible that this object was a larger fragment originating from Comet Halley. However, its exact nature remains uncertain, and it may also have been an unrelated sporadic meteoroid.

Regardless of its origin, capturing such a dramatic explosion seemingly aligned with the Galactic Center was an extraordinary stroke of luck—one of those rare moments when the sky offers something truly unforgettable.
