Behind the Stars: A Stellar Time Filler

This image began its journey when I was trying to make the most of my imaging time—basically hunting for something to fill the gap between two other targets. Like any responsible astro-nerd, I consulted AstroBin for ideas, scrolled around in Stellarium, and eventually wandered into NINA like a tourist without a plan.

That’s when it happened: a frame popped up with six bright (I know it's more than six, but on NINA I counted six back then), colorful stars, twinkling like they were auditioning for a cosmic talent show. Strangely, there was no official named object in sight—just pure, unfiltered star power. I figured, “Why not spend an hour here? It’s just stars.”

Well, the joke’s on me—I ended up loving everything about this frame. The symmetry, the color, the subtlety… turns out, sometimes the best subjects are the ones that don’t even have a name. Just six divas shining in the dark, and now they’re the real stars of the show.

Came back the next day to review my frames and toss the bad ones. Out of curiosity, I stacked this target (which I was calling Five-Stars at the time—don’t ask), and to my surprise, there was the faintest hint of dust lurking in the background! Naturally, I did what every astrophotographer does: whispered “More light…” to myself and kept going.

Fast-forward four months (don’t worry, I wasn’t imaging it nonstop—only when it was high in the sky), and I figured I had enough data. Then came the narrowband itch: “Let’s try some H... maybe O...” Yeah, no. After 10 hours of OIII with my f/4 scope, I got a whole lot of nothing. H-alpha showed a bit of promise, but still, no fireworks.

Over the past month, I must’ve processed this thing ten times—and scrapped it ten times. Nothing looked right. Eventually, I thought, “This would look so good with diffraction spikes from a Newtonian.” But I didn’t want to cheat with fake ones—those always look like AI-generated eyelashes. So I dusted off my old budget Newtonian, grabbed an hour or two of data just for the stars, and harvested some real spikes to blend in later.

Today, I finally forced myself to commit. Stacked everything, pulled it into PixInsight, and made a brave decision: no gradient removal. I learned the hard way that for this target, any background correction just killed the vibe. So, I stuck to color calibration, gave it a light stretch, and removed the stars. Did the same with the Lum filter, and here we go...

But then came the problem child: H-alpha. The signal was painfully weak—and to make matters worse, some lovely internal reflections (thanks, filter…) decided to steal the spotlight. Honestly, the reflections were putting on a better show than the nebula itself. It was like trying to hear a whisper during a rock concert.

I didn’t want to sink countless more hours into capturing new H-alpha frames just to keep the bright star out of the field. So instead, I took a few ultra-short exposures—short enough to ensure no real signal from the nebula made it in—just to map out the internal reflection patterns. Later, I used those as masks to (somewhat) remove the reflections from my main H-alpha image, with a little help from Photoshop and a “multiply-and-pray” technique. The result wasn’t perfect, but good enough to serve as a soft, faint background layer in the final image.

Then came the final touch: borrowing diffraction spikes from my other Newtonian scope. Sounds simple, right? It wasn’t. On one hand, the star shapes from that scope were… let’s say “aesthetic disasters” (so I couldn’t just replace the stars wholesale). On the other, the spikes were glorious. Especially on the big, bold stars like Rasalgethi—they flared out with full rainbow colors like some interstellar disco ball. I only wanted spikes on the big stars, though, so it turned into a delicate spike transplant operation. But hey, worth it.

Adding those spikes ended up taking about 50% of my total processing time for this target—which is wild, considering they’re basically just fancy lines. And since the spikes weren’t captured with the same gear as the main data, I’ve included both versions here: the original image, and the one with the starry bling. Pick your favorite.
