My device cannot be added to the images!

I have spent a lot of time recently filling in my device database.

Now the migration is required but my devices  in the new database are not why?

It might help to say what equipment can't be added

I have to re-create all my equipment, mounts, telescopes, filters in a new database, even though I populated the original database two months ago this is highly irritating.

I wish the stuff would have carried over because I couldn't get it to accept a Daystar Quark Chromosphere or Daystar 80mm refractor. This is possibly the end of me including my equipment on a photo.

The move to the new equipment database is great in my opinion.  It lets us all use a common equipment vocabulary and thus means we can search images based on this new standard.  It is NOT difficult to do the migration (I did it today) and there is a feature to add stuff (currently in beta) via the Explore->Equipment menu option.

In fact, I just added my Windows 11 mini control PC to the database and Salvatore approved it within half an hour.

Salvatore has made a huge improvement by adding this to his site, so please embrace it.

Sadly I see no improvement yet…….. Perhaps we have to get more familiar with the new feature.

It's very easy to understand: In the old database the very same equipment has been entered in very different ways, so you have multiple different entries for the same stuff. The data migration attempts at introducing a well defined description for each item in a way that each item is represented by only one dataset in the database. This can not be achieved in an automated way, so astrobin requires some support by its community. It's a bit annoying but requires only a quite small time investment. As a result it will be much easier to link images or users with the same gear. I encourage all astrobin users to support this data migration.

I had trouble just entering my Celestron HD800 as the imaging scope.  I tried 800HD  and Edge8,  it just got hung.

Count me as one who had no problems whatsoever with the database migration. It literally took me about 15 minutes to migrate all of my equipment into the new database.

I concur with Wolfgang. Moving to a standardized database will help us all.

Strange, it's in the database:

No issues so far on my side. I had to create some items but that was no problem at all.

Sorry for the bother Scotty, the reason why this couldn't be carried over is exactly why we're doing this migration. It's easier if each user does their own because they know what they own even when the naming is a bit ambiguous. Plus, due to there being over 140,000 items in the old database, we cannot have a team of volunteers do it for all. It's a one time process that doesn't take too long, and you can still skip it if you really don't want to be bothered: simply add the equipment using the new form to your new images as you upload them. For future images after the first, it becomes easier because you can quickly add recently used items, and load/save presets.

The improvements are many, but not all of them are already available, and will be after a sufficient number of items have been migrated.

For now you can take advantage of the fact that, as we go, the search results will be less and less fragmented, i.e. a search will return more images (previously, due to duplicates and naming inconsistencies, it would not find images by items that are spelled differently but are really the same item).

You can also take advantage of the new equipment explorer page (https://app.astrobin.com/equipment/explorer/) and add filters to find equipment items according to technical specifications.

You also get to see what items are most often used with certain items. E.g. when you see a telescope, you see what cameras it's most often used with. This can be very useful for people new to the hobby, who wonder if certain items make a good combination together.

Real soon, the following is coming:
  - An interface to compare items of the same class, so you can see them side-by-side and compare technical specs
  - A dedicated forum for each equipment item, that notifies users of that item of new posts (unless they opt-out): this makes it easy to connect with users who use the same equipment.
  - Additional search filters in the search page, so you can search by ranges of technical properties (e.g. images acquired with a telescope with a diameter between X and Y)

Finally, if anyone has issues, please contact AstroBin via the official support channel (Help menu at the top), as the AstroBin forums are a place to discuss astronomy and astrophotography, and not AstroBin itself.

Thank you!

Hi Salvatore,

you missed my second sentence.........

".... Perhaps we have to get more familiar with the new feature. "

Meanwhile I am ;-)  migrated my whole stuff in the new Database.

Hi Frank,

yes, sorry for missing it. And of course, I take feedback and make improvements all the time.

Thanks for migrating and for further communications on this or other support topics, please get in touch via the Help menu.
