Hello friends,

Is the Sky Watcher Heritage 130p a suitable telescope for an amateur user considering buying their first telescope? What other telescopes would you recommend instead?

Thank you for your help and the information you provided.

If you are looking for a very portable scope that will only be used visually it should be fine to start with. It’s a lot better than the scopes a lot of us started with.

For visual yes

But photography through it no,

You’ll run into focusing issues when not using a Barlow.

I can’t recommend a specific scope without knowing your interests and what you want to do with it.

Actually, I'd like to start with observation. I've also read some suggestions about "smart telescopes" for getting started with astrophotography. However, looking directly at the sky with a telescope rather than through a phone screen seems more exciting, at least for me as a beginner. I don't know if this is true, these are just conclusions I've drawn from what I've read. Thank you so much for your time.

It is a great little scope, with surprisingly good optics. It was my first scope back in 2011 and I still have it whilst all other scopes have been and gone. I directly compared mine on Mars and Jupiter with a 127mm maksutov and a 100mm f/10 achromat and the views through the H130p were the best to my eyes. I even put it up against a C8 I also owned and I actually preferred the views though the H130p again. Though it wasn’t the best example of a C8 to be fair.

The 130 heritage and a Baader 10mm BCO under a good dark sky is a serious DSO observing tool

That’s not too different from the first scope I owned: a 6” F6 Newtonian from Edmund Scientific, which I still own. I don’t know the Sky Watcher Heritage 130p personally, but looking at it online, I think that scope will be easy to use, pretty portable, and good for visual use. One thing to bear in mind is that the night sky is a big place, so be prepared to spend time (and some frustration) trying to locate those “faint fuzzies” out there…I recommend first using it on the planets, moon, open star clusters, and bright nebulae. My first view of Saturn though a neighbor’s telescope literally changed my life!

Quick note is that a telescope on a “goto” mount can get you looking at things faster, but you won’t learn as much that way and it is pricier.

But be warned: you will get hooked, and then you will want fancier gear, and then you are doomed…:-)
