Hello,

Has anybody experience with the skywatcher Wave150i ?

My wave 150i worked very good until I made some changes in the cable management. In order to have less USB cable between the telescope/mount and the PC, I installed on the telescope platform an USB-Hub with power input. However, after several minutes first the Dec axis did not move and some minutes later also the RA axis.

Meanwhile I have send to the seller for repair.

But it would be of interest for me, if has someone an idea what could happen?

Hi Gerhard

I’ve been using my 150i for a year now, pushing the cabling as far as the mount allows it. So far, touching wood, no problems. But I’ve got the nagging feeling that I’ve read posts like your’s before. Would you be so kind as to share the way you did the setup/cabling? Both for trying to identify the problem and to prevent similar things happening to others?

Did you supply power to the hub via the mount’s power-ports or directly via a separate powercable that came with the hub?

Since the USB-Port on the platform is only a through-put i.e. separate from the controlling USB-port for the mount, and the power-outlets on the platform are on a separate circuit as the mount’s power-supply, I really wonder what can cause your problem. If the hub was powered directly via it’s own cable completely separate from the mount, the only connection (or lack thereof) that could play a part here would be ground(-).

Keep us posted if you get any additional info from your seller, too.

Swift repair and clear skies!

Robin

Hi Robin,

thank you for your information.

Meanwhile I know, what was wron with my setup.

I was at Kiripotib last summer and I had the skywatcher mount with me. Power cabling was as followa: 15A 12V Power supply and two power cords; one for the telescope rig (camera and cooling, filter wheel, focuser as well as the mini PC on the rig. The other power cord wa for the mount. This was ok.

Back at home I thought, why two power cords. Let us use one with thicker lines. And i Have a 50A power supply, what should go worng? In order to minimize the USB cables I installed also an USB Hub. The mini PC was removed, as its power was too low. The power distribution was manged by a pegasus mini part. This was a mistake. First the USB Hub consumes alone about 2A, 12V and on the other hand - the power supply has a big trouble: when using more than 2A power the voltage drops down. At least to less than 10.5V and this has broken the circuits in the Skywatcher 150i.

Now it is still under repair and I hope that they will send it back to me as soon as possible (I am waiting already nearly about for four months.

Best regards

Gerhard

I am also having issues with my SW Wave150i. My mount is in transit, going back to seller for repair as well.
Worked fine for several sessions, then I didn't get to use for nearly 2 months. Tried to image last week and mount wouldn't move in RA axis towards east.
I didn't change any configuration as to when it was working.

Hi,

I hope that you must not so long wait for repair than me.

Thanks, Gerhard, that additional information is useful. Makes me worry a bit less about the new power supply I’m currently putting together and any further plans to upgrade to a powered USB-hub. Currently I’m using a small unpowered one for command and relay functions and keep everything powerhungry connected via my ASI2600MC Pro with it’s dedicated power supply.

I do hope you’ll get your mount back soon (properly fixed, that is)! Nadz11.ns, too!

Clear skies and swift repairs!

Hi, I got an information from my seller. I should use in future in any case a separate power supply for the mount. This is also important for my second mount, a Skywatcher Eq6-R Pro.

Both posts are asking for help with the same Skywatcher Wave150i telescope that developed axis movement problems after the user modified the cable management system by adding a USB hub.
