Hi John,  I own 5.

I started off with the Celestron 11" Edge HD SCT.  After that my collection started to grow:

Skywatcher 150ED refractor
Stellarvue SVX-130 refractor
Williams Optics RedCat 71
Williams Optics Flurostar 120

On my wish list:   Takahashi Epsilon E-180 Astrograph

Clear skies to all,

Patrick

I have sometimes shot through my telescope, but most of the time, I use camera lenses. I now sometimes piggyback my camera on my telescope and use an illuminated reticle eyepiece for aiming when using prime wide field lenses, essentially using the telescope as the viewfinder. I find that this semi-tracked method works very well and is an alternative to using a sky tracker. Here's an example of what I did using this method:

I have three - C925 Edge HD (with CGEM mount), William Optics GT 81 (on an iOptron  ieq30-Pro mount) and a Wiilliam Optics Redcat 51 that I also use on the ieq30-pro mount.    With any luck I'll be adding a C11 Edge HD telescope by the end of the year.  That will go onto my Paramount MyT mount.

Hi John,

Canon T8i/14mm/SkyGuiderPro
Rokinon 135/ASI6200MM/AM5
RedCat 51/ASI294MM/CEM40
Askar 130PHQ/ASI6200MM/CEM120EC2
Celestron EdgeHD 9.25/ASI6200MM/CEM120EC2 (mount shared with the PHQ)
Celestron RASA 11/ASI6200MC-MM/Celestron CGX
Celestron EdgeHD 14/ASI6200MM/CEM120EC2 in a fully-automated remotely-controlled 10x10 RoR observatory
Leased 20" RC in Chile (soon)

Thankfully all rigs are automated and I can often run most of these scopes in parallel either on-site or remotely and still manage to get some sleep!

Celestron EdgeHD 8 with 0.7x reducer

Mounts:

Atlas Pro AZ/EQGT & 10Micron GM1000HPS

3 scopes:

WO GT81 WIFD (382 and 478 mm FL)
WO Redcat 51 WIFD
Celestron Edge HD8

If I had to keep only 1 (though I couldn't imagine parting with any!),  it would be the GT81 for being most well-rounded with target selection.  I have the new FLAT GT flattener which works very well and gives me that little bit of extra focal length.

The Stellarvue SVX130-T is beckoning me but I would be in the dog house, and with winter coming…….

Oh, an old topic is back alive.

I want to ask here, is it about the number of telescopes or the selections of those telescopes? I mean, is it about having like 10 telescopes all are different or almost, or having like several ones as same and few different? So is it about the number [quantity] or the quality?

So if i have for example one PlaneWave 24”, will this be a better choice than my having for example three RC10/12 from good enough brand??? Or having One Takahashi say 130mm than having 4 Skywatcher Esprit 100mm or two 100mm and two 120mm for example?

The practical answer is have the right OTA for the job and that can mean several. The non-practical answer is that you love telescopes and optics and that leads to collecting more of them in more of an unplanned way, just for the fun of it.

I don’t see anyone making value judgements here. You define what is “better” for you. Own what you like, nobody will bat an eye.

I have a single 150PDS Newtonian.

I would love to have more but as I have had only 3 fully clear nights in the 115 of 2026 so far, I’m not sure I could justify the expense

A “better” is a general word, for all, not just not, so is it better for you or me to have 10 scopes rather than 4, is it “BETTER” for me or you to have this brand over other, and so on, it doesn’t always mean only me, it was a general curiosity question, sometimes buying more is to get “better” in something somehow, not only to increase numbers.

Two questions in my mind for you:

  1. Why would you love to have more?

  2. If you have much more clear nights, say up to 250-300 nights per year, how many more you will get?
