I wouldnt reccommend buying used if you are new to telescopes.  You are new to AP, not astronomy in general (hopefully) so I would think its safe to assume you have a working knowledge of telescopes and at least a basic understanding of their maintenance and optimal operation requirements.  If that is the case buying used is a great way to get gear at bargain prices.  I recently purchased a used 140mm Orion Mak-Cass for planetary photography and have been quite pleased with its visual performance so far (we will see how it performs in photography once we get some good oppositions).

Rather than used or new, it depends on where you buy, and on your budget. A quality second hand or outlet dealer inspects a telescope before shipping and specifies any traces of usage. Though it may be cheaper, purchasing from a private individual involves a balance of risk. Used or new, after quite a while of using an SCT you may wish to collimate it. Disadvantage of used gear is 1. no warranty, 2. it won't sell at a high price should you give up your hobby or upgrade to a larger telescope.
Best luck!
Robert
