[RCC] Wizard Nebula - OIII Filter Halo Reduction - Forums

Pretty new to astrophotography and have been going through my first NB sessions. I'm processing all in PixInsight, and for the most part things have been going pretty well following some well-carved workflows I've found online. In this image though, I've found my OIII filter (Antlia 3.5nm 1.25) is producing some halos around brighter stars that I have not been able to effectively remove by trying to mask and use morphological transformation.

The two problem stars in this image are the two closely grouped in the right - center. Any thoughts / other techniques to try? Also any other general tips/pointers are much appreciated - thanks!

Did you try another telescope? can you borrow another telescope if you don't have and give it a try? Or try this target without a reducer.

I can't recommend you to go and buy another filter such as AD/Chroma 3nm, people did fine with 5nm also, so i think it is either with the scope or reducer or maybe the filter isn't designed good enough to reduce/minimize halo with OIII, Antlia is planning to produce 3nm version sooner or later, i only need Ha 3nm for my dual system because i already have OIII/SII 3nm from Chroma at 1.25" size.

Unfortunately don't have another scope to try out on, but the other channels were good. I'm thinking of maybe returning the O-III (still within return policy) and opting for another manufacturer. It sounds like O-III is a problem with many manufacturers, so I might just pony up for a Chroma and keep the Antlia filters for Ha & SII (which have been great btw). Was hoping it was something I could process out, but I have not been able to do so without it looking obviously altered.

That will be a good idea, or just wait a bit longer, Antlia announced that they will produce 3nm filters soon, i contacted them for Ha 3nm only, they said it could be available by end of this year or beginning of next year, i have Chroma OIII/SII 3nm, but i have Astrodon Ha 5nm, this is in one filter wheel and one set, i want to have my other set at 36mm with Optolong NB to be as good as well, and Antlia is the only one cheaper that could be good enough for 36mm size, i am building dual system so i better have both sets that much good to have nice data for all channels.
